My Grandad: The Story of Captain Ngoc Vo Nguyen
First of all, thank you so much for the generous donations so far.
Unbelievably we have almost reached our initial fundraising target in just 3 days of raising...how amazing and incredibly generous of all the donors! This was one of the main milestones as it was the minimum budget required with a lot of cost-cutting and pro-bono in order for us to be confident in producing the film that would do my Grandad justice
As a result, if we do somehow miraculously exceed the initial target, I reassure you that none of it will be going to waste...Any additional funds will be fed back into upgrading filming, production and post production (e.g. professional sound mixing, upgrading the main shooting camera, colour grading etc.)
Any upgrades from this point will go a long way to help to capture the story, emotion in the final film.
You most likely will know that Grandad was once a captain and telecoms engineer in the army...
...but did you know that he spent 6 months in the Philippines before arriving to the UK originally hoping to move to the States...or that he spent his first year in the UK in Motherwell, Scotland...or that he was on the brink of survival with no food or water left before the British Navy spotted him on a tiny boat in the middle of the Pacific?
We would like to capture the colourful stories from Grandad’s incredible life in a series of short interviews
This will then be produced into a Subtitled film that can be enjoyed by our family and heard by many generations to come
Having different people interview Grandad will allow him to open up differently and offer unique perspectives.
Interviews will be conducted in Vietnamese for Grandad to be comfortable especially with his current throat problems. The content will eventually be translated into English and subtitled in the final edit.
The funds raised will be used to hire professional grade recording equipment (microphones, lighting, tripods), a cameraman, a Director and professional editing with a 6 week turnaround to produce a 10-15 minute professional short film that will stand the test of time.
I aim to have a super fast turnaround (due to risk of his deteriorating health) with filming starting on 3rd July and release date to be on the 13th August
Once completed, we aim to arrange a private screening for up to 20 family members including Grandad himself and also shared online
