Choosing to get mental health treatment to drag yourself out of the depths of depression shouldn't rob you of being able to pay your rent. But that's exactly what is happening to my childhood friend. We've been friends our ENTIRE lives...born 2 months apart.
She made the incredibly COURAGEOUS decision to say YES. Multiple times. YES to letting first responders take her in an ambulance to the ER. YES to going in-patient. YES to replacing a suicide attempt with treatment, counseling, and recovery. She said YES to life. Today, February 6th, 2023 she is 6 months and 15 days sober.
I was there on that horrific night when she drank and hoped to never wake up. I drove to her house, alongside the police for a welfare check. Thank God it wasn't too late. Lying with her in the ER bed she told me that her reason for living was her children. She is one of the most amazing mamas I know.
They are her everything. She chose life and she chose them. But taking 6 weeks away from work to get mental health treatment hasn't paid her rent, bills, car payment, or legal fees with her ex. All things she was able to afford prior to treatment.
She is a VERY talented person and has thrived in her career for over 20 years. She successfully went back to work right out of treatment and has been back to her full-time schedule every day since. Her employer knows her gifts and her value. I DO TOO.
Let's show her that she can find hope in knowing there is support from a community of people who care about her life. People who recognize that choosing life also comes with an incredibly hard uphill battle. Helping relieve her of some of the financial barriers she is facing will allow her to put her energy into her kids.
