Hi everyone!

My name is Sandrine Martin, I'm 26 years old, and I'm a filmmaker from Montreal, Qc, Canada. I studied film animation with a specialization in stop motion at Concordia University and graduated in 2021. During that time I made multiple short films in stop motion, which have gone on TV and multiple festivals. After graduation, I went to live in Japan for a year. This experience impacted me greatly, and I'll always cherish the memories I have of it. The short film that I'm making now is greatly influenced by it. The places you will see in the film are inspired by places I have visited. The emotional challenges that the main characters are going through are also related to mine. I was a young woman living alone in the countryside of a country I was still unfamiliar with, and even though I tried very hard to learn as much japanese as I could prior to the move, I still couldn't speak it well at all. I felt very vulnerable for a while and it took me some time to lower my guard and let myself trust the people around me.

The film will be a 10 minute-long short film in stop motion, and I am looking for funding for the production stage at this time. It's an horror / magical realism movie, touching on the themes of my experience in Japan and fairytales. One thing that I discovered during my studies is my love for creating fantastical creatures of all kind, so I would like to keep pushing in that direction.

The short already gained support through a first grant, however it is not enough to cover the cost of the movie, which is why I'm asking for your help.

The realization of this project will be beneficial for the evolution of my work and my career in many ways. First, it will allow me to work with other professionals, and ensure that all participants can deliver quality work thanks to fair and equitable remuneration respecting the norms of the industry. Since I want to apply for funding for the post-production and distribution stages of the project, I will have been able to create high-quality material for said application.

Regarding the impact on my career, during my academic journey, I have had the opportunity to work with various animation professionals and get involved in numerous projects. This has allowed me to gain a significant amount of experience in filmmaking. I have been involved in all stages of pre-production, production, and post-production in the past, so I feel well-equipped to lead a project of this magnitude. Due to the fact that its creation will take longer and that I will be working with a larger team, receiving funding from you could truly propel me in my professional career by allowing me to finance this project that is dear to my heart. Furthermore, since this project could be submitted in professional categories at festivals, it will be a good opportunity to network with other professionals in the field, aside from those I already work with.

Besides fair remuneration, this funding will allow me to buy equipment (lenses, light set, tripod), and material for building the puppets and the sets. I am liking a spreadsheet I made detailing the exact amount of money I plan on spending and on what (it is in french however, sorry). Part of the amount I ask of you is also to compensate for the cut GoFundMe takes.

Je m'appelle Sandrine Martin, j'ai 26 ans et je suis une réalisatrice montréalaise. J'ai étudié l'animation avec une spécialisation en stop motion à l'Université Concordia et j'ai gradué en 2021. Pendant cette période, j'ai réalisé plusieurs courts métrages en stop motion, qui ont été diffusés à la télévision et dans plusieurs festivals. Après mes études, j'ai vécu au Japon pendant un an. Cette expérience m'a profondément marquée et j'en chérirai toujours les souvenirs. Le court métrage que je suis en train de réaliser est grandement influencé par cette expérience. Les lieux que vous verrez dans le film sont inspirés des endroits que j'ai visités. Les défis émotionnels auxquels sont confrontés les personnages principaux sont également liés aux miens. J'étais une jeune femme vivant seule à la campagne dans un pays que je ne connaissais pas encore très bien, et même si j'ai fait de mon mieux pour apprendre le plus de japonais possible avant mon déménagement, je ne le parlais toujours pas très bien. Je me sentais donc très vulnérable au début et il m'a fallu du temps pour baisser ma garde et me permettre de faire confiance aux gens autour de moi.

Le film sera un court métrage d'une durée de 10 minutes en animation image par image, et je cherche actuellement du financement pour la production. C'est un film d'horreur / réalisme magique, abordant les thèmes de mon expérience au Japon et des contes et légendes. Une chose que j'ai découverte pendant mes études est mon amour pour la création de créatures fantastiques en tous genres, donc j'aimerais continuer à explorer cette voie.

Le court métrage a déjà reçu le soutien d'une première subvention, cependant elle n'est pas suffisante pour couvrir le coût du film, c'est pourquoi je fais appel à votre aide.

La réalisation de ce projet sera bénéfique pour l'évolution de mon travail et de ma carrière de nombreuses façons. Tout d'abord, cela me permettra de travailler avec d'autres professionnels et de m'assurer que tous les participants peuvent fournir un travail de qualité grâce à une rémunération juste et équitable respectant les barèmes de l'industrie. Comme je souhaite appliquer pour du financement pour les étapes de post-production et de distribution du projet, j’aurai donc créé du matériel de qualité pour la demande.

En ce qui concerne les retombées sur ma carrière, au cours de mon parcours universitaire j’ai eu l’occasion de travailler avec divers professionnel.le.s de l’animation et de m’impliquer dans de nombreux projets. Ça m’a permis de gagner énormément d’expérience en création cinématographique. J’ai touché à toutes les étapes de préproduction, production et postproduction par le passé donc je me sens bien placée pour diriger un projet de cette envergure. Par le fait que sa création durera plus longtemps et que je travaille avec une plus grosse équipe, un meilleur financement pourra véritablement me propulser dans ma carrière professionnelle en me permettant de financer ce projet qui me tient à cœur. De plus, puisque ce projet pourra être soumis dans des catégories professionnelles aux festivals, ce sera une bonne opportunité de faire plus de réseautage avec d’autres professionnels du milieu, autres que ceux avec qui je travaille déjà.

Outre une rémunération équitable, ce financement me permettra d'acheter du matériel (objectifs, jeux de lumière, trépied), et du matériel pour construire les marionnettes et les décors. Je joins ci-dessous une feuille de calcul que j'ai réalisée détaillant le montant exact que je prévois dépenser et pour quoi. Une partie des coûts demandés sert aussi à compenser pour la part que prend GoFundMe.
