To celebrate his legacy and fulfill his wishes, we want to bring our beloved tatay home.
Neri Barte was born on July 6, 1960. Many knew him as Board, or Kons or Tatay.
Board for when he was a Provincial Board member, and Kons for when he was a Municipal councilor. Tatay, of course for those who experienced his extraordinary fatherly care.
Tatay was more than all the names that he was called. Tatay first became a councilor at the age of 28. His youth was characterized by his charisma, and the sincere motivation of his ideals for public service. My sister and I were born not into politics --but into public service. Throughout our lives, tatay always reminded us to introduce ourselves not as politicians' daughters but as public servants, and he always highlighted the difference between the two.
Tatay always taught us to give without any expectation of gain, and this he embodied. Tatay gave to a fault. I often felt that throughout our lives, we always had to share him with the people he represented. Tatay's political career lasted for 30 years. It was colorful--at times turbulent and dangerous, and his tireless efforts often seemed in vain. All through this our mother stood by his side.
In 2016, tatay lost the elections. At that time, my sister and I were already residing in the US. We decided to encourage him to move and come to the US, so that he can finally rest and enjoy some privacy, without the heavy tolls of political life that he loved despite the strain. Tatay made the decision to come and spend time with his grandchildren, who were grateful for his presence. He made the sacrifice as he understood that my sister and I had made our lives here and that he wanted to be with us, his family.
Throughout the past seven years, we were lucky enough to spend more time with tatay and give him medical care that he never would have received in the Philippines. He struggled with multiple angioplasties, dialysis three times a week over five years, eye surgery, five cardiovascular stent placements and a pacemaker. We are grateful for the medical care that extended his life. Tatay was 63 years old. Despite knowing all the medical issues he had, we always looked forward to spending more precious time with him.
He passed peacefully, with his wife and children by his side on September 28, 2023. Our father gave us so much love, that we want to fulfill his heart's desire to be brought home and laid to rest in his beloved Philippines. ️
