Hi all,
My dad has recently been diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease, a life-limiting condition that will eventually cause death.
About MND:
With motor neurone disease, known as MND, messages from the motor neurones gradually stop reaching the muscles. This leads the muscles to weaken, stiffen and waste, which can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe. MND is life-shortening and there is no cure.
While the doctors can't put an exact time scale on things (although the average life expectancy is 2-3 years after diagnosis), we are now looking at a much shorter time left with Dad than we had expected. A lot of this time will also be spent with limited movement and abilities, making it even more important to do things while he still has the ability to!
Of course, this has been absolutely devastating for the family, and we really want to make the most of the time we have left with him. To help Dad do as much as possible while he's still able to, we are wanting to fundraise to help him tick some items off his bucket list!
These things include:
- Going to North Wales and doing the big zip line
- A trip to St. Lucia
- Spending as much time in the sun as possible
Funds will also go towards any additional costs associated with the disease, such as an electric scooter until he's eligible for an electric wheelchair (minimum £1,500) and deposit for a wheelchair accessible vehicle (minimum £5,000).
So me, my brother and both our partners are going to run the Bristol Half Marathon to help raise money! Couch to half marathon in 16 weeks feels slightly insane, but if it helps Dad tick off some bucket list items then it'll all be worth it.
Thank you!
