My Dad Lost His Home to Hurricane Ian

On Tuesday, September 27, Hurricane Ian ravaged Florida and a 10+ ft. storm surge decimated the state’s West Coast. While I am fortunate that my family survived the storm, my father’s home did not.

At age 73, he is now without a place to call his own. My father’s home in Bonita Springs was destroyed and washed away. Aside from his beloved dog, Sophie, and a duffle bag of clothes, he now must rebuild his life from square one.

As the reality is setting in for all of us that his home and all his belongings are gone, I can’t sit by and want to help him however I can. But I can’t do it alone. His material needs are real, but equally, I want to give my dad hope. I’m asking those close to me – and therefore, him – to help this moment of crisis.

My dad (Rick, aka Pop-Pop) doesn’t know I am doing this. This morning as I was grabbing my favorite coffee mug, I realized my father doesn’t have any coffee mugs, let alone a coffee maker or any simple necessities. As he waits for insurance (hopefully!) to begin the process of rebuilding, he will need to rent a home and buy even necessities for the foreseeable future.

I can’t imagine starting over at my father’s stage of life. He is the type of person who is always willing to help his neighbors and care for his community. If you would be so kind as to help with his recovery effort, it would mean the world to him – and all of us who love him.
