My dear father was recently in a terrible traffic accident in Venezuela. I want to tell you that Venezuela is going throw the worst humanitarian crisis in its history; and things can get even worst during a personal emergency.

Venezuela is experiencing service failure (electricity, water, internet, and gasoline), medication shortage, and currency devaluation, among many other problems.

All these circumstances have also impacted the ability of the Venezuelan healthcare system to function properly.

My dad needs 3 surgeries and has received the first of those in Jan 8th after 4 days of waiting for medical attention. My dad couldn’t even get the surgery he needed right away because the nurses were boycotting from lack of pay! And there was only one surgery room functioning in the hospital in Merida, a huge city! They put a metal rod in his leg, but they had to redo it because it wasn’t the right size.





 My mom was given a list of 47 medical items that SHE had to go out and find and buy (the metal rod, gloves, shoe covers, masks, alcohol for sterilizing, etc.) Can you imagine ending up in the hospital and then a loved one having to get everything you need for surgery? This whole situation has been incredibly scary, expensive and painful for us.

For all these reasons we have been forced to seek treatment from the private sector. We need to start planning the next interventions (surgeries) as soon as possible, due to the high risk of a systemic infection, and just as importantly, to save his leg. The cost of private medical care in Venezuela is very expensive and exceeds our economic capabilities so we turn to you and your heart.

Our greatest desire is to see our father lead a dignified life again and that this unfortunate experience only remains a bad memory. Please help us achieve this.

El día lunes 04 de enero de 2021 mi padre, Eduardo Castillo, sufrió un terrible accidente de tránsito en la trasandina de Venezuela, mientras viajaba desde el estado Mérida hacia el estado Lara. El impacto le causó heridas severas que comprenden fractura abierta de fémur, tibia y peroné.

Venezuela en este momento está experimentando la peor crisis humanitaria de su historia y fallas constantes en servicios básicos (electricidad, agua, internet y gasolina), escasez de medicamentos e hiperinflación constante y acelerada, entre muchos otros problemas.

Mi papá necesita al menos tres cirugías y recibió la primera de ellas el viernes 08 de enero de 2021, luego de cuatro días de espera por atención médica. No pudo someterse antes a la cirugía que necesitaba pues las enfermeras estaban protestando por falta de pago y solo había un quirófano en funcionamiento en el hospital. Durante esta intervención le pusieron una barra de metal en la pierna pero tuvieron que sustituirla en otro procedimiento porque no era del tamaño adecuado.

Lamentablemente, la situación del sistema sanitario de Venezuela es precaria y se caracteriza por la falta de recursos y personal profesional. Por ello, no es materialmente posible proceder con las próximas intervenciones (cirugías) dentro del hospital y nos vemos en la necesidad de asumir su tratamiento desde el sector privado.
Mi papá es el sostén de mi familia y requerirá diversas cirugías adicionales para salvar su vida en primera instancia y no menos importante su pierna, las cuales deberían realizarse cuanto antes por el alto riesgo de una infección sistémica. 

Ante esta situación tan adversa que sobrepasa nuestras posibilidades económicas, necesitamos de tu ayuda. El costo de la atención médica privada en Venezuela es muy elevado, por lo que acudimos a ti y a tu corazón.

Nuestro mayor anhelo es ver a nuestro padre llevando una vida digna otra vez y que esta experiencia desafortunada solo quede en un mal recuerdo. Por favor, ayúdanos a conseguirlo.
