Hello, my name is Donny McKinnies.

I’m reaching out today with a humble heart — asking for help as my family and I navigate an incredibly challenging chapter far from home. What began as a joyful vacation (see smile on my face in last photo here) has turned into an unimaginable journey, with each day testing our strength, faith, and hope.

Nearly 3 1/2 months ago, I found myself suddenly and violently ill, 1,800 miles from home. Within hours, I was fighting for my life as a ruptured hiatal hernia led to my esophagus tearing and septic shock. After being rushed between hospitals here in San Juan, I underwent a miraculous, life-saving 13-hour surgery. Sadly, the ordeal claimed my right leg; it was amputated above the knee. Since then, I have been in the hospital for 100 days, unable to eat or drink, relying on feeding tubes and facing daily pain as I fight a stubborn infection and wait for my esophagus to heal.

I could never have imagined being in this situation — completely bedridden, surrounded by tubes, away from home — but every day I thank God for my family, who have not left my side for a moment, and for the kindness of strangers, who have carried us through with prayers and encouragement. My faith grounds me: I believe with all my heart that God has a purpose for this season and that He will use these trials for something greater.

The reality, however, is that the financial strain grows greater each day. Medical bills, lodging, travel, and basic living expenses are piling up as my expected stay in San Juan stretches into an uncertain future. We have exhausted most of our resources trying to keep our heads above water.

That’s why I’m reaching out to you: Every donation, no matter the size, makes a profound difference. It means we can focus on healing, rather than stressing about bills. It reminds us that we are not alone in this fight.
