My Brother is a fighter, please sit in his corner

I am writing this with tears running down my face and pain in my heart... By brother George, My little brother George,  Born on September 8th 1976. Anyone who knows him would agree with me that he has a heart of gold and is truly a one of a kind.  Always putting himself second. Never selfish. I'm proud to be his brother. George and his now wife met when they were 17 years old. They dated until 2006 when they got married . In February of 2008 his son David was born. It was one of the happiest times times in George's life. A beautiful healthy boy! Months later, George had his a seizure and was taken to the hospital by paramedics.  An MRI determined that there was a mass in the back right side of his brain . He stayed at Etobicoke hospital for nearly 2 weeks waiting to be transferred to St Michael's Hospital to see a Neurosurgeon. The doctors were very assuring, they said that the best thing was to have surgery, remove the mass and do a biopsy. He stayed at St Michael's awaiting his Brain Surgery, after getting bumped every day for over 1 week they finally took him in for the surgery.  After coming out of surgery the doctors said that the instruments were not calibrated properly, "They missed it" and that he had to go back in to do it all over again. He waited 2 more days until they they took him in for the second time. Pathology diagnosed him with a Grade 2 brain tumor called Astrocytoma. Everyone was devastated! Not George, he was smiling laughing and making jokes. He said "don't worry about me, I'm good!" Princess Margaret immediately put him on Radiation to destroy what they couldn't remove in surgery followed by oral Chemo.  Things went well for a while. We were all very happy and thankful   In 2009 MRI's showed the tumor had spread and his 3rd surgery was scheduled.  This happened 3 weeks before his daughter Ava was born. Another biopsy determined his tumor was progressed to stage 3 Anaplastic Astrocytoma. He was told he had 2-4 years to live. They prescribed  more chemo.  Despite what doctors said, the family celebrated Ava’s 5th Birthday and George’s health; he surpassed the 4 year mark and was doing well. From 2015 to 2017 George was doing well, MRI results were stable      In the early months of 2018 MRI scans were more frequent as there was always “slight” progression of the tumor but things felt different this time. Doctors said that the chemo he was taking was no longer working.  During this summer George suffered more frequent headaches, more seizures. He was losing his vision in his left peripheral. He was losing his balance he had to walk with a cane and needed assistance for daily tasks like getting dressed. He was confused and forgetful. After multiple visits to  the emergency. He had an MRI.  The MRI showed that the tumor progressed and also grew a cyst which caused his brain to shift to one side. The doctors once again determined that he had to have surgery, this would release pressure from his brain and make him feel better.  August 22 2018 he had his 4th surgery. The cyst was decompressed and some of tumor was removed. A pathology report came back. He now has Stage 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme. The most aggressive form of brain cancer. Survival rate for secondary GBM is average 8-14 months. Doctor said he maybe 1-2 years. There is very little left in terms of treatment, a different chemo or clinical surgeries. George regained his balance and is able to walk and dress himself now. Due to his condition he no longer works, so along with his health issues, they have tremendous financial burdens to worry about (mortgage, funeral expenses, college fund for the kids) due to the fact that  he had no life / mortgage insurance and because of his illness he would now never be approved. They haven’t been able to put their kids in any sport programs.  David was just diagnosed with a learning disability and they are currently looking for treatment options.   George is currently waiting for Disability to kick in which will not cover 1 by weekly mortgage payment, they have used up a hefty line of credit that they were lucky to have and now have  resorted to over drafts on their accounts.  George does his best to remain positive, we all do, but depression gets the best of him some times. It has been a long roller coaster for the family  They  would love to do one last family trip while George still can, make memories and enjoy life a bit.  This is a very difficult thing for a brother to write for a brother. George  knows how much I love him and his family There is so much more to this story, some of which I cant say, and some I could not put into words. As tears run down my face,  I thank you for reading and thank you for your help.

Georges Family would like to thank everyone for their support
