My beautiful princess ‘Mimi’

Hi, my name is Andreia, I’m Maria’s mum. Maria is 5years old and with so much energy and talent to make fun all the time, lovely smile and super sweet with everyone.

We are a Portuguese family with 3 little girls who came to UK to have a better life. We have bought our house one year and half ago and we were having a perfect life. But our wonderful life has fallen apart last year when, after so many times going to hospital thinking Maria could be constipated and coming home with a big doses of laxido, we discovered a huge tumour with a size 19:16:9cm on her tiny tummy just on the top of her right kidney. When we were trying to accept that, something that we never could, the “bomb” just came for us… it had spread to her bones and it was a Neuroblastoma in stage 4.

The tumour started leaking and she had to stay in Paediatric Critical Care Unit with a drain and there was a really bad time.

After chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy, we are now having immunotherapy and maintenance in cycles.

I never thought to do this..

Unfortunately her cancer is really aggressive and after she finishes the treatments if the cancer returns there is only 15% of cure. And for someone who had cancer, there is always a big risk to relapse.

Now we had some news about trials to do after treatment to prevent the disease come back, but all of them out of Uk and we have to pay for them. There is some trials around this cancer, and the one we are looking for is a vaccine in New York, it will attack the neuroblastoma cells if they appear again and it’s completely out of our financial possibility so I came to ask for help.

If there is a good chance to finish with this cancer, I’ll do everything possible for it.

Maria’s Doctor will decide which of those trials will be the best option for her, each of them has a specific criteria and that only can be decided after all her exame results come back and after a huge work from the doctor side.

UPDATE (20/02/2025)

The doctor called today to update about Mimi’s exam and about how it will be after the treatment she’s on.

So, looks like her exames are really good, the bones are clean and the tumor is less brighter than it was in November. Amazing news!!

About the treatment, she will finish immunotherapy and maintenance in May when was supposed to go for that vaccine we were talking about. But we are not doing it. The doctor said there is not enough data to tell that vaccine is better than the new medicine we have in UK (from America as well) and the vaccine clinic looks like is choosing the best cases to get good outcomes, therefore gets easier to sell because the success percentage is high. She said they can not choose Mimi due her cancer has mutated and gets more difficult to have the results they want to sell it (I didn’t like this part but she was very straight about this..)

She will do a medicine which is called DFMO in UK. If .. she has a relapse, there is trials to do on her.. we don’t want that happening again but there is a big chance and I’ll accept a day at the time..

From what she said, is from their point of view the best option now for Mimi and I’ll take that, we know nothing and we need to trust them …

About donations:

I thought to close the GoFundMe page. There is trials that might suit her though if the cancer comes back and would need money quickly. Because of this we will keep the page open for those who want to help.

All money raised will be for Mimi's treatment, or if the cancer does not come back donations will be donated to LATCH when Mimi's doctor says ok, because LATCH have been helping us a lot.

Olá, o meu nome é Andreia, sou mãe da Maria. A Maria tem 5 anos e tem muita energia e talento para fazer piadas o tempo todo. Tem um sorriso lindo e é super querida com todos.

Somos uma família portuguesa com 3 meninas e viemos para o Reino Unido à procura de uma vida melhor. Comprámos a nossa casa há um ano e meio e estávamos a ter uma vida perfeita. Mas a nossa maravilhosa vida desmoronou-se no ano passado quando, depois de tantas idas ao hospital a pensar que a Maria poderia estar constipação intestinal e regressar a casa com uma grande dose de laxante, descobrimos um tumor enorme com o tamanho 19:16:9 cm naquela pequena barriga, mesmo em cima do rim direito. Quando estávamos a tentar aceitar isto, algo que nunca conseguiríamos, a “bomba” simplesmente veio ter connosco… tinha-se espalhado para os ossos dela e seria assim Neuroblastoma em fase 4.

O tumor começou a verter e ela teve de ficar na Unidade de Cuidados Intensivos Pediátricos com um dreno e passou por momentos muito maus.

Após quimioterapia, cirurgia e radioterapia, estamos agora a fazer imunoterapia e manutenção em ciclos.

Nunca pensei fazer isso..

Infelizmente o cancro dela é muito agressivo e quando ela acabar os tratamentos, se o cancro voltar, ela terá apenas 15%de hipótese de cura.

Agora tivemos algumas notícias sobre testes a serem feitos após o tratamento para evitar que a doença volte, mas todos eles são fora do Reino Unido e temos de pagar por eles. Existem alguns ensaios sobre este cancro, e o que procuramos é uma vacina em Nova Iorque, atacará as células do neuroblastoma se estas voltarem a aparecer e está completamente fora das nossas possibilidades financeiras, por isso vim pedir ajuda.

Se houver uma boa hipótese de acabar com este cancro, farei todo o possível por isso.

A doutora da Mimi vai decidir qual será o melhor tratamento para ela, porque cada um destes tratamentos tem certos critérios para preencher e só se saberá após o resultado dos exames e de muito trabalho da parte da doutora.

ATUALIZAÇÃO (20/02/2025)

A médica ligou hoje para atualizar sobre o exame de Mimi e como será após o tratamento em que ela está neste momento.

Então, parece que os exames dela estão muito bons, os ossos estão limpos e o tumor está menos brilhante do que estava em novembro. Notícias incríveis!!

Sobre o tratamento, ela terminará a imunoterapia e a manutenção em maio, quando deveria ir para aquela vacina de que temos falado. Mas não vamos fazer isso. A médica disse que não há dados suficientes para dizer que a vacina é melhor do que o novo medicamento que temos no Reino Unido (também da América) e a clínica da vacina parece estar q escolher os melhores casos para obter bons resultados, portanto, fica mais fácil de vender porque a porcentagem de sucesso é alta. Ela disse que eles podem nao escolher a Mimi porque o cancro dela sofreu uma mutação e fica mais difícil ter os resultados que eles querem para vender (eu não gostei dessa parte, mas ela foi muito direta sobre isso..)

Proximo tratamento será um medicamento chamado DFMO no Reino Unido.

Se .. ela tiver uma recaída, há tratamentos experimentais para fazer com ela.. não queremos que isso aconteça novamente, mas há uma grande chance e nós temos que aceitar um dia de cada vez..

Pelo que ela disse, do ponto de vista deles a melhor opção agora para a Mimi é esta e nós vamos aceitar isso, não sabemos de nada sobre este assunto e precisamos confiar neles ...

Sobre as doações:
