My baby boy Lucas needs your help!

Hi there, my name is Bas and in 2016 I moved from the Netherlands to Peru for the love of my life Melisa. In 2016 our first daughter, Kamille, was born. We were very happy.

On the 5th of November 2022, our long waited son Lucas was born. At first all seemed normal and we were happy. However, after four days he stopped reacting to us, responding to our voices, became extremely sleepy and was rejecting food. We went to the baby consult where the doctor panicked, after examining and checking his blood results. And were urgently sent to the Intensive Care.

Apparently, his white and red blood cells are not working well, since Lucas has the blood group of his dad and his bilirubin level were extremely high. A bit higher levels are common for newborns but when it becomes too high and not being treated timely can become very harmful.

That’s what happened to Lucas. When we arrived to the emergency, he didn’t get treatment immediately at the IC. As a result, higher levels of bilirubin, he developed severe jaundice (yellow skin pigmentation), also known as icterus, with complications affecting his lever and brain.

The high values of jaundice caused permanent brain damage.

We still don’t know what that exactly means for our Lucas, but the pediatric neurologist says after seeing the MRI, and have examining him that he will most likely have problems with moving, talking and learning.

Unfortunately, Peru does not have a great healthcare system, as in the Netherlands, and therefore we need to pay a big part of the medical costs ourselves. High costs covering the Intensive Care, ultrasounds, examinations, MRI, transfer with ambulance to MRI, light therapy, blood transfusion etc. And stimulation therapy. After 10 days of treatment the costs are quickly piling up, currently €3.808,- and counting. This is becoming impossible for us, both having local salaries, to cover any longer.

We would like to collect €10,000 to cover current and future hospital bills for Lucas, allowing him to become stable and afterwards move to the Netherlands where he can receive more suitable medical help and have more chances for a normal life.
