Our Story:
I have had Remy her whole life. She was born in the room beside mine on November 27th 2012. She was the runt of a litter of 12, and the only one who was full brindle. I could fit her in the palm of my hand, and she was such a special dog right from the start. Remy-Roo is my best friend, she has helped me get through the worst, and also been there during some of the best times of my life. She is like no other dog I’ve ever come across. Every single person that has had the chance to meet Remy has completely changed their outlook on big dogs. She is so intelligent, loveable and the most gentle and kind dog on this entire planet, she would make your heart smile. I can't imagine my life without her, and as sad as life can be l know one day it will be her time to go, but I know with every fiber in my being that this is NOT her time and she needs all the help she can get to make it through these next few days. There are no words that can explain the the role she's played in saving my life. Unfortunately she has very low odds of making it if she’s not put through treatment.
What Happened:
On December 5th Remy suddenly fell very ill. She was rushed to the Animal Emergency hospital, and diagnostics revealed that among other things, her kidney and liver values were off. She was very critical that first night, and we thought she might be beyond saving. Thankfully, she pulled through the night. Her diagnosis was initially a bit of a mystery, but the vet told me that they believe she has been battling a UTI, and that the underlining cause was from the full hysterectomy she underwent a year and a half ago. She had a full hysterectomy to save her life after she was diagnosed with an infection called a closed pyometra, which caused her uterus to rupture. After surgery she was given a weeks worth of antibiotics and that was supposed to be good enough to give her a clean bill of health and she could come home. After said surgery, if there was any piece of her uterus missed and left inside her, it could be life threatening, and that is what they believe happened. They think that infection has been brewing since then, and has reached a critical point.
Treatment:
The vet told me that this infection has caused damage to her kidneys and liver, and as strong and brave as she is it has done a lot of damage to her body. The vet said she could be looking at weeks of treatment to save her, from the emergency care to any potential ongoing treatments to keep her stable. The next few days are critical and she needs to see a specialist.
I’ve exhausted every resource that I have. Just covering the emergency hospital care has drained every last cent to my name and it’s not even close to covering the full cost of all her treatment. With support from my parents, a down payment was placed for her to be transferred to Canada West specialist hospital, and she was transferred over the evening of Monday, December 6th, but the specialist said we're looking at $6,000- $7,000 just for the first few days of diagnostics and treatment. Combined with the money spent on treatment at the emergency hospital, the total cost of her care will be close to $10,000.
I feel like I’ve failed her, I’d do anything to have her home, in my arms again. If you have it in your your heart to help her I know she would be so grateful, I know I am.
