My 83 year old neighbor is alone and needs help ❤️

There’s an old man I’ve seen walking up and down my block countless times, always wearing a suit blazer and matching pants. I decided to talk to him and found that his clothes, which appeared endearing from afar revealed signs of neglect up close. Moth holes, tattered seams, rips, dirt. The signs of someone who is at an age where normal care becomes difficult and plight is often invisible.
I learned his name was Tom and he’s 83. That he was once in the navy and a national chess champion and that he has rented and lived in the same apartment in Silverlake for 40 years. He questioned why I was being so kind to him and told me I was the ‼️first person in over 15 years who has started any kind of conversation with him ‼️His internet has been disconnected for months; meaning interaction is far and few in between, as was his ability to play chess too.
Most of his friends have died or moved away and he “never thought he’d live this long.” I headed to goodwill (a place he says he “can no longer afford”) to buy him some clothes, free of moth holes and rips.
After posting on my instagram I was asked where funds could be donated. I put up an arbitrary number - I just want to get him any aid we can that can help him for as long as it can.
With the help of this beautiful online community, I’d like to help raise some funds for him to pay for food, living expenses (he’s behind on all bills,) cleaning services, etc. His apartment is in disarray and could desperately use the help. My goal is to work to get him on as many benefits and getting these funds to him to help out.
I believe in the butterfly effect that good can have, and in doing what we can in small ways to make a large difference in our community.
