Hi, my name is Hayley, and I’m reaching out for support during an incredibly heartbreaking time for my family.

My brother and sister recently lost their unit and every single one of their belongings—including their car—in a suspicious fire. The blaze completely destroyed my sister’s bedroom, leaving nothing but part of a burnt bed frame behind.

My older brother is currently incarcerated and due for release in two weeks. It breaks my heart knowing he wasn’t even there to try to save his possessions, and that he will be coming out to absolutely nothing except the clothes he had on him when he went in.

My younger sister was living in the unit at the time. Just hours before the fire, she was assaulted by her male neighbour upstairs. She called me afterwards, and even though she didn’t want me to come, I went to check on her because I was worried for her safety. She left the unit with only the clothes she was wearing—no shoes, no belongings—never imagining what would happen only hours later.

Later that night, we received the call that the unit had been set alight. When we arrived, police told us the fire had been started through the bedroom window—my sister’s bedroom. I can’t bear to think about what could have happened if she had been asleep in her bed like any other night.

After emergency services secured the property, we returned to the unit and discovered that someone had broken in and taken whatever little remained. It feels like every time we think things can’t get worse, they somehow do.

My sister is in no emotional, physical, or financial position to rebuild right now. My brother is unable to help from where he is. I’m doing everything I can, but this situation is far beyond what I can manage alone.

I’m not someone who usually asks for help, but we truly have no other option. If you’re able to donate—no matter how small—it would mean the world to us. Your support will help my siblings begin to rebuild their lives from nothing.
