· Background
The Community Food Pantry @ Highbridge (CFP@H) opened in 2007 and is operated by the Muslim Women's Institute for Research & Development (MWIRD), a Bronx based community service organization working in the areas of hunger relief, health education, inter-faith outreach, and the transitional needs of new immigrants. It provides assistance to the needy in Highbridge, one of the poorest neighborhoods in the Bronx. The pandemic has only exacerbated food insecurity within our community, especially households with children.
“Where is my next meal coming from?” It’s a question that more than a million New Yorkers asked themselves before the pandemic, are asking themselves today, and will, unfortunately, be asking themselves tomorrow. It’s a question no one should ever need to ask in one of the world’s wealthiest cities. Healthy food is a basic human right, and no New Yorker should ever have to experience hunger and not know where their next meal is coming from.
· Urgent Need for Vehicle
In 2020 the vehicle, used by the CFP@H to pick-up food donations and transport food parcels, was destroyed in a hit and run accident. With Ramadan approaching, CFP@H needs a vehicle to help use again pick-up food donations from across the City and distribute food packs to impoverished families.
· Ramadhan/Zakat
Whether you would like to pay Zakat, Sadaqah, Fidya or Kafarah – your Ramadan donations will help us purchase a vehicle and support MWIRD’s efforts to meet the basic needs of the those we serve – particularly the Muslim families we serve during the Ramadhan season. MWIRD is zakat eligible.
· Cost
We seek to raise $9000.
