Help Michal Beat Long-COVID

My name is Anna Palumbo, and I am organizing a fundraiser for Michal Goldstein, who has life-threatening complications due to long-COVID and needs our support to obtain the medical treatment necessary for her recovery.

Michal had a rare response to COVID that caused her immune system to attack her own body. She now relies on an IV for all of her nutrition, as her stomach and digestive tract are unable to absorb nutrients and even reject a feeding tube. This type of treatment is her only option to receive nutrition, but makes her prone to life-threatening infections and has already resulted in multiple long-term hospital stays over the past two years

Michal was recently treated at the Mayo clinic, where experts in treating long COVID determined there is a therapy that could help her. However, her insurance company continues to deny her this potentially life-saving therapy, and has resulted in months of delay. In this time, Michal has been hospitalized for multiple infections, each of which creates more obstacles for her recovery.

The appeals with her insurance will likely take many more months, and may ultimately result in her therapy being denied. Most importantly, even if her therapy is approved by insurance months from now, Michal may not have the time to wait. If her body rejects the IV she currently uses for nutrition, she will have no other options.

The therapy the Mayo clinic recommends for Michal will provide her body with healthy immunoglobulin cells to “reboot” her immune system. This therapy will cost approximately $150,000, and will be followed by a returned stay at the Mayo clinic for continued treatment. She will also need medical support at home while she continues to recover and regain strength. And, as she gets stronger, she will need financial support so that she can resume her life and begin a long road of recovery. Michal is currently unable to stand for long periods, requiring her to rely on a wheelchair, and she requires homecare support for her daily routines.

Michal is an incredibly smart, kind and caring person, with a bright future ahead of her. I have known her through our work as PhD candidates in the same lab at NYU. During this time, she has shown nothing but persistence and calm as she faces insurmountable odds. Your support will help to make sure she has the resources she needs to continue this fight.
