Jason Fregien is an amazing person - a devoted father, husband, brother, son, Cub Scout Volunteer, Boston Scientific colleague, and friend. One of his greatest passions in life is tennis - he loves to play, loves to teach, and has volunteered countless hours as the EVAA Tennis Coordinator. In fact, his entire family shares this passion - his daughter Anna teaches tennis to young kids, his wife Marie is the tennis coordinator at Lifetime Fitness, and their sons Seth & Levi are currently playing varsity tennis for Eastview High School. The family has logged thousands of hours on the court.
Sadly, Jason has spent the past year battling Glioblastoma - an aggressive terminal brain cancer that has rapidly stolen his ability to be Jason and will continue to take him away. You can follow his difficult journey on the Caring Bridge site (https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/jasonfregien/journal) that Marie has faithfully maintained. He has suffered through complicated misdiagnoses, surgery, radiation, chemo, ER visits, and scans. So many scans. Today, Jason struggles with pain, the loss of vision, energy and memory, and difficulty making basic decisions. No more walks of more than 1 block. No more helping the kids with complicated math homework. He can complete a word find. He forgets to eat if Marie isn't there, and food brings its own anxieties and problems.
One of the hardest parts for Jason is that he can no longer be a part of the tennis world. No more coaching. No more organizing tournaments. No more time with his family and friends on the courts. He can watch.
Jason can no longer work, and Marie has had to cut back her hours to focus on making the most of the family time they have left. They are struggling with the question of quality of life vs quantity of life. When asked if he had anything on his bucket list, Jason replied "I always thought I'd make it to an Open."
This is where YOU come in.
We're working with a Grand Slam Tour company to send the tennis-loving Fregien family to Cincinnati for the Western & Southern Open in August 2021. This is an opportunity for them to create memories together while Jason is still able to participate, although in a diminished capacity. A local Apple Valley business has graciously agreed to match the first $5,000 we can raise. Please help us give back to a family who has given so much to others in our communities!
We are also interested in any other individuals, organizations, or companies that are willing to work with us. Anything raised above & beyond the cost of the trip will be put towards a fund to support youth tennis in our community and possibly develop a tournament or scholarship program in his name.
Jason is passionate about making tennis accessible to all kids and has volunteered countless hours to make that a reality. Please help us thank him - and his family - for their contributions to our community by donating to our cause.
Finally, for those of you who don't know me, I've been friends with Marie since we took a road trip to Tulsa for a conference in 2011. Jason & my husband always connected at kids' stuff since our son is in Levi's class. Anna was one of our daughter's favorite babysitters. Seth inspired our son's love of Rubiks cube. Our dogs are best friends because we try to walk them together daily. We love this family, and know that so many others do too, so we created a way for all of us to surround them with love.
