Hi, this is Tobi, MUWCI 98-00.
I am working with MUWCI's sustainability coordinator and fundraising team to fundraise for a solar roof on the Science Building roof to improve the school's environmental and financial sustainability. This solar roof will not only reduce MUWCIs environmental footprint but also save the school a significant amount of money - money that can the be spent on scholarships.
MUWCI has made absolutely impressive improvements with regards to sustainability over the last decade! They have been certified a Platinum Rated Green Campus by the Indian Green Building Council in May 2020. For a 25 year old campus in a challenging location, this is an exceptional achievement!
MUWCI has achieved waste segregation and recycling rates of 60%-70%, they have reduced the amount of water pumped up from the Mula river by 24.5% since 2013, and they have reduced electricity consumption by 21%.
Reducing the electricity consumption is not only an environmental issue for MUWCI. Currently a lot of money is spent on electricity - money that could go to better causes such as scholarships.
This is where solar power comes in. MUWCI is in a great location for solar electricity. In October of 2021, MUWCI installed its first solar roof, on top of the Social Centre. In a few short months, it has already saved MUWCI around €2000.
Now, with our help, MUWCI would like to install a solar roof with 54 solar modules ("panels") on the roof of the science building.
Every €200 we raise through this fundraiser will allow MUWCI to pay for one 350 Watt solar module and the associated wiring etc.
Every solar module will save MUWCI around €90 every year, and reduce CO2 emissions by 125kg.
The whole roof will save MUWCI almost €5000 in electricity bills every year.
Over its lifespan of 20 years or more, the solar roof will save MUWCI around €100,000 - every dollar, euro or rupee we donate will save MUWCI nine times that amount over the system's lifetime.
To ensure that the solar roof will remain operational over a lifespan of 20 years or more, regular maintenance is already budgeted into this project. Also, the system comes with a monitoring system so MUWCI can always check if the roof is working as expected.
Contributing to this solar roof is an investment in MUWCIs long-term financial sustainability and in a better environment.
If you would like to receive updates from MUWCI about progress with this project, you can leave your name and email address here .
Another way to give is through MUWCIs fundraising website (https://uwcmahindracollege.org/donate/). Select "Sustainability" as the cause. This way, you may be able to claim tax benefits on your donation. However, your donation will not show up in our live updates on progress.
