Mutual Aid-ee Fundraiser for FTP Fund

*Fundraiser Update 3/25/21*

We are grateful for your participation in the reimagining of Eidi and Mutual Aid. It is heartening that we have made it to almost $8000 so quickly. We are almost at our goal already, and this has gone beyond our expectations. The response we have seen demonstrates the power we have as a people.

This amount of money will be able to provide bail for 2 to 4 people (for more information on how bail operates please visit https://www.ftpfund.org/about). That is 2-4 people who don’t have to endure the torturous conditions of jail while waiting for the criminal punishment system to determine their fate.

We welcome all donations. Please feel free to involve your communities and ask folx you know to contribute! We particularly encourage communities who celebrate Norouz to join us in the spirit of Mutual Aid-ee. Can you help us make it over the finish line?

Capturing the spirit of generosity and rebirth, a new world is possible and we are a small step closer.

Who Are We?

Formed in the wake of the 2020 Minneapolis uprising, Strike the Match (STM) is a grassroots collective of diasporic Iranians committed to abolitionist, anticapitalist, and decolonial action. As accomplices to the Black-led abolitionist movement, we have set out to "strike the match" and ignite and further fuel collective action within and by way of our communities.

What is Mutual Aid-ee?
Mutual Aid-ee is a re-interpretation of Norouz gift-giving traditions (eidi) to include mutual aid efforts in the fight to abolish police and prisons in the US. We aim to support mutual aid funds as a tool of radical collective care within and beyond our communities, and amidst and in support of such struggles. The most auspicious gift to give is to commit to your community! We re-imagine eidi, a tradition of gifting money during Norouz, into a practice of redistributing resources and dismantling systems of oppression.

Mutual aid projects are a form of political participation in which people take responsibility for caring for one another and changing political conditions. Strike the Match seeks to direct the spirit of generosity and the celebration of new life awakened by the season of Norouz towards FTP, a mutual aid fund working to end the prison system and fighting for Black livelihoods.

Who is FTP Fund?
FTP Fund (fiscally sponsored by Youth Justice Coalition) is a volunteer-run community bail fund helping free people arrested for defying police, white supremacy, and poverty in Los Angeles. Like Strike the Match, FTP formed during the covid-19 pandemic and the national uprising to defend our streets and defund police after the police murder of George Floyd. From the FTP Fund website:
"We must abolish pretrial detention, not reform it. Bail is ransom used to torture, exploit, and control our communities. Many features of the modern bail system can be traced directly to the enforcement of enslavement and apartheid. Bail is crucial to the growth of the prison-industrial complex because it can ruin the lives of people who police choose to target for arrest, separating them from their families, jobs, homes, and communities. Bail multiplies the ways in which people are vulnerable to the whims, lies, and racism of police. Once someone is arrested, police hand the baton to prosecutors and judges who use bail to coerce people to accept plea deals that will brand them criminals."

100% of donations will be directed to FTP Fund.
