Dear friends, neighbors, and community members,
Due to his public facing and outspoken political organizing, community organizer Matt Colburn is currently navigating a grueling legal battle. He is facing two active misdemeanor charges, which could result in jail time, stemming directly from this political work. Because these cases remain in legal limbo with ongoing trial delays, the financial and emotional toll of managing his defense while keeping up with everyday living expenses has mounted significantly.
When local organizers are targeted with prolonged legal battles, it creates a massive strain that impacts their ability to work and survive. Right now, Matt needs our collective support to secure his housing so he can navigate these legal hurdles without the fear of losing his home.
For years, Matt Colburn has stood on the front lines in Charleston and the broader Lowcountry, dedicating his time, energy, and voice to advocating for working-class people, defending our constitutional rights, and building community solidarity. From speaking out at City Council meetings to leading pickets and marches , Matt has consistently put the needs of our community first. But grassroots organizing is a full-time commitment that doesn't come with a paycheck, and fighting against oppression comes with real personal costs
We are aiming to raise $4,000 to fully cover Matt’s housing costs for the next two months. This mutual aid fund will ensure his housing remains completely secure right now and to provide a critical 60-day buffer, giving him the stability he needs while dealing with courts and repressive/unconstitutional city ordinances.
By relieving the immediate pressure of rent for the next two months, we can ensure that Matt has a safe place to live while he fights these charges and continues his vital grassroots work!
