A friend of all of ours (who wishes to remain anonymous*) is having an incredibly hard time right now. They and their family (including partner, teenager, and under a year old baby) are currently experiencing shelter insecurity. They are trying to figure out next steps out of the motel they have been living in, which is costing them more than they can bring in and attempt to save in order to find a stable home. In addition, they are trying to bring their stepchild into this future home. This person’s partner is working full time but after expenses, they are living hand to mouth. Because they have a small baby at home, this person has chosen to stay home to take care, since they are unable to afford day care.

We know this must be strange asking to help an anonymous person, but Jen and I both feel that no matter what your opinion of Alameda, we are a community bound by something greater than what we think. Both of us have contributed small amounts to this person but ultimately we feel that it would be much more helpful if we could get them a larger lump sum to get ahead rather than just a few bucks here and there to get by.
