Raising funds for children to learn music

St John's Brass and Reed Band in Limerick, Ireland is one of Limerick's oldest bands, having been established in 1865. Our band is a non-profit community-based musical charity that is now working on cultural development in the communities of Garryowen and neighbouring areas of Limerick.

We are launching our 'First Steps in Music' programme, to provide opportunities for young people from local communities to be taught and learn music.

This will involve tutors teaching both brass and woodwind instruments, either within the school environment or in our band hall in Garryowen. An after-school programme in our band hall is actively being pursued with the aim of continued opportunity for musical expression. We will be encouraging all pupils to join our band practice so that we can form a Junior band. This will enable them to learn key skills such as team work and responsibility, further their musical education, forge new friendships and be part of a community of music-lovers.

We are asking for funds to purchase instruments for our instrument bank. Our goal is to purchase 4 cornets, 4 trombones, 2 French horns, 1 baritone horn, 1 tuba, 3 clarinets, 2 alto saxophones, 2 tenor saxophones.

In these challenging times, where purchasing instruments or having music lessons may be difficult, we aim to give young people support and the opportunity to have access to a bank of musical instruments, subsidised music lessons, and to be part of a musical group.

We will be eternally grateful to those who donate to this cause and are able to help our young local communities experience and in turn spread the joy of music.
