Five years ago, I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer, news that completely devastated me and my family. I quickly met with a team of doctors to determine the best treatment plan and began chemotherapy the following week, along with 21 days of radiation. After completing treatment, I had a PET scan that showed I was cancer-free, which felt like a miracle and gave us hope that the hardest part was behind us.
Three years later, that hope was shattered when I received a call from my doctor telling me the cancer had returned—this time aggressively. I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer that had spread to my bones. Tumors were found in my spine, pelvis, hips, arms, and legs, causing severe and constant pain. This daily pain eventually made it impossible for me to continue working, forcing me to leave my job of 27 years.
At the time I had to stop working, I was employed at a bank that was merging with another bank, and I was responsible for two high-deductible insurance plans. As medical bills began piling up, the financial strain on my husband and me became overwhelming. My husband works as a dump truck driver and is laid off during the winter months, which further adds to the stress of covering medical expenses and basic living costs.
Adding to the hardship is the emotional toll on our family, especially our 21-year-old son. He has had to watch his mother go through chemotherapy, spend days confined to bed, and live with constant pain, all while feeling helpless. Knowing how deeply this affects him has been one of the hardest parts of this journey, as cancer has changed not only my life but the lives of everyone I love.
