Music for the Heart - Larry's Cancer Benefit

Music for the Heart - A Neighborhood Concert for Larry’s Fight Against Cancer

Featured on Houston Chronicle

We are The Heights Violin Studio with music and kindness at the center of our hearts. When we learned Lucia's dad, Larry, was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, we knew we had to take action. The biggest challenge? To persuade Lucia and Larry to accept help!  Larry and Lucia stand tall with quiet determination to not only face the fight of stage 4 colon cancer as a family, but also the challenges of mounting medical bills and financial hardship during a global pandemic. We wanted Larry and Lucia to know they can remain strong with integrity while accepting heartfelt support from our community too. We all know how life can change in an instant. Please read some of Larry's own personal words below:

"In August of 2019, I had an emergency that landed me in the St. Joseph's Emergency Room. I had no symptoms before that day. No pain. No indication that I was sick. Within 24 hours, my whole life changed. I stayed at St. Joseph's for 11 days starting with that Emergency Room visit. I had half of my colon removed, and I was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. After I was discharged, I moved over to MD Anderson where they immediately got to work with chemo treatments. I have had liver surgery to remove a significant tumor back in January of this year. I have now had 16 chemotherapy treatments with different drugs. I have two more treatments in this particular treatment plan. This is my second plan. I am doing relatively all right, but it is unlikely that treatments will be over after I finish this plan.

In October, when I first started treatments, I was able to find a job and work through the chemotherapy. Then the pandemic started, and like many other people, I was laid off. I have piled up tons of bills between COBRA and copays, not to mention regular living expenses. I have been extremely lucky to have support from friends and family through this whole thing. It has been quite a ride. I am not out of the woods, but I can't wait until cancer is over. I make sure to live now. My kids can't wait. I write regularly at: https://www.larrylines.com/ to keep everyone up to date, but be warned, it is extremely graphic and my language is irreverent. It is an informative and funny memoir mixed with cold hard facts. I am turning this blog into a cancer memoir that I hope to get published. We'll see. Crazier things have happened in the world this year." - Larry

The Heights Violin Studio is looking forward to coming together and sharing the gift of music through a benefit concert. We will be hosting a masked and socially distanced porch concert on November 8th at 4pm at the corner of Waverly and 10th Street in Houston Heights (621 W. 10th Street). All funds raised will help Larry with medical bills and living expenses for his family.
