Murph is a Belgian Malinois puppy in training for urban disaster search and rescue. For those of you unfamiliar, this is a rescue team that is called to disaster locations throughout the US to search for live victims in structural collapses, natural disasters and terrorist attacks.
As a fireman, I was naturally drawn to the events on 9/11, but besides the bravery and heroics demonstrated by the first responders that day and the days that followed, what inspired me most was the drive and perseverance of these tireless search and rescue K-9's that attempted to recover live victims from the rubble. Then in 2010, I was inspired yet again when learning that thanks to USAR California Task Force 2, nine live victims buried beneath concrete and metal in Haiti were located by the K9s and their handlers.
To train a K9 to perform such a momentous task comes at a cost to cover the K9 itself, the equipment required and elaborate training props intended to mimic real disaster environments.
Basically, the economic impact for training materials and equipment is limiting Murph's opportunity to reach his full potential.
Murph has shown so much promise in the early stages of obedience and agility. He would be a huge asset to the state of Illinois and the Chicagoland area, specifically.
I know that he can achieve great things one day. If you are moved to do so, please consider donating to Murph's training fund.
*Thank you, Jeff Hakanson and Heidi Huber of Dogstyle Inc. of Vernon Hills, IL for your generosity thus far and for donating your expertise, training time, food, and boarding since day one.
