Muriel: victim of a tragic accident in Bali.
Muriel (Miyu) Schoovaerts was seriously injured during a collision on Monday night 21st November in Bali – Indonesia. She was on her bike on the way home when she was hit by a car while crossing an intersection. Muriel is from Belgium.
Miyu was, severly injured and unconscious, and found to have multiple complex fractures (hip, pelvis, femur, open ankle, foot and toe), which have resulted in several major surgeries in the days since the accident.
Even though the Police apprehended the Indonesian driver of the car at the time of the accident, no breath test was conducted to test wether the driver was under the influence of alcohol – and likewise no tests were conducted on Miyu to prove she was not under influence. Due to these incomplete records, Miyu's Indonesian insurance is now refusing to support her souring medical costs.
After 8 years residing in Bali, Muriel finds herself in a hopeless situation. According to the attending physicians she will be unable to work for at least a year. At this point in time, it is unclear if Muriel will suffer some degree of permanent injury. The costs of surgery, prolonged hospitalization, aftercare and rehabilitation are still being investigated. However, it is apparent that the final sum will rise above 50,000 euro.
Frederik De Stercke and Alain Decarpentrie, as well as the Belgian Embassy, are doing everything in their power to get Miyu’s future back on track. However, any support to help Miyu cover the costs of these increasing medical bills would be enourmously appreciated.

Muriel Schoovaerts (Miyu) raakte op maandagnacht 21 november zwaar gewond bij een aanrijding op Bali – Indonesië. Ze was met de brommer op weg naar haar woonplaats toen ze bij het dwarsen van een kruispunt werd gegrepen door een wagen. Muriel is Belgische.
Miyu werd ernstig gewond en raakte buiten bewustzijn. Ze had meerdere complexe breuken opgelopen (heup, bekken, dijbeen, open enkel, voet en teen) met verscheidene zware operaties tot gevolg.
Hoewel de politie de Indonesische bestuurder van de wagen kon onderscheppen werd er geen ademtest afgenomen van de chauffeur. Ook bij Miyu werd meteen na het ongeval geen ademtest of bloedanalyse gedaan. Door onvolledige informatie weigert de Indonesische verzekering van Muriel nu tussenbeide te komen in de medische kosten. Die lopen intussen torenhoog op.
Na 8 jaar op Bali staat Muriel voor een uitzichtloze situatie. Volgens de behandelende artsen zal ze zeker een jaar werk onbekwaam zijn. Of ze er blijvende letsels zal aan overhouden is momenteel onduidelijk. De kosten van operaties, langdurige hospitalisatie, nazorg en revalidatie worden nog in kaart gebracht. Maar nu al is het duidelijk dat de uiteindelijke rekening boven de 50.000 euro zal uitstijgen.
Verwanten Frederik De Stercke en Alain Decarpentrie, en de Belgische Ambasade, stellen alles in het werk om de toekomst van Muriel terug op het goeie spoor te krijgen. Elke inspanning om Miyu te helpen bij het dekken van de hoog oplopende medische kosten zal hoe dan ook zeer gewaardeerd worden.

Muriel Schoovaerts, (Miyu), fut grièvement blessée la nuit du 21 novembre suite à un accident de la route a Bali – Indonesie. Elle était en route vers son domicile en moto et fut soudainement percutée par une voiture. Muriel est Belge.
Miyu fut tres grièvement bléssée et perdu conscience. Plusieures fractures complexes ont été constatées (pelvis, fémur, fracture ouverte de la cheville et fracture au pieds et doigt de pied) suite à laquelle plusieurs opérations seront inévtable.
Bien que la police a pu intercepter le chauffeur de la voiture, un alcootest n’a pas été effectué auprès du chauffeur. Un alcootest ni une analyse de sang ont étés effectueé auprès de Miyu directment après l’accident. Suite à un manque d’information crusial, la companie d’assurance Indonésienne local refuse toute intervention financière et les frais médicaux s’éllevent à un montant colosalle.
Après avoir passé 8 merveilleuses années à Bali, Muriel se trouve dans une situation insurmontable. Les médecins traitants éstiment la durée de sa revalidation a plus d’un an, sans compter le faite qu’elle ne pourra pas travailler durant cette très longue période. Les frais d’opérations et d’hospitalisations, révalidations etc, s’éllèveront a un montant approximatif de minimum 50.000 Euro
Frederik De Stercke et Alain Decarpentrie, ainsi que l’Ambassade Belge mettent tout en place afin d’assurer un avenir soutenable pour Muriel. Tout efforts afin d’aider Miyu seront donc très appréciés vu les montants énormes des frais hospitalier.
