Multiple Myeloma Cancer Battle Support for Joe

I am starting a fundraiser to raise money for my Dad's medical costs. On Monday, June 24th, he went in for a spinal fusion on his neck after complaining about pain for months. A mass showed on his MRI’s and the doctors said not to worry – it was probably benign (not harmful). It turns out it was malignant (cancerous). He was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a rare blood cancer that affects plasma cells. The cancer cells build up in bone marrow throughout the body. His MRI’s show other masses in his body along his spine and on his side.

We are awaiting further test results to discuss the best course of action treatment wise. In the meantime, he required a second spinal fusion from the back of his neck to keep his spine from collapsing in on itself. The cancer had eaten away the bone so much the first fusion was not sufficient to stabilize the spine.

My Dad was a public school teacher for 30 years to underprivileged and cast-aside youth. He has since retired and before his surgeries enjoyed gardening, playing guitar, harmonica and singing. He also enjoyed hanging out with his Dog Billie and doing ongoing home improvement projects. He cooked and cleaned and watched football, hockey and the news.

My Dad has always been there to support me in the toughest times of my life and has always been my rock. Nothing could have prepared me for this news.
