Muijala Art Space is calling on your support to get through these winter months!

Unfortunately the funding we expected to receive for this period – and whose support we mostly rely on in addition to residency fees – did not come through. As an emerging, non-profit, artist-run residency space, we rely on grants and funding to keep us running. As you probably all know, these take a huge amount of time to prepare for and submit. So when they aren’t successful, we take a big financial hit.

Miraculously, we have survived and thrived for 1.5 years since we started our activities in 2023, without consistent funding and as a small voluntary team. Through our own investment – time, money and effort – we created a home, workspace and support system here for 30+ international artists who have stayed at the residency. We also hosted 7 free events, attended by visitors and friends in the local community and beyond. The art space & residency exists in a beautiful historic gardening school that we renovated ourselves. We love it dearly but it requires a lot of continuous and costly maintenance. This winter, in addition to the absence of grants, we were hit with the big unexpected cost of having to fix our windmill which we could only partly cover by local funding.

In order to make it through to 2025 and survive a long and chilly Finnish winter to see the spring, we are calling on your support! Our winter writing residency will of course continue as will our 2025 programme. But we are hoping to raise about €5000 for our bills. Your contribution will help us pay our heating, electricity, firewood and part of the windmill renovation. And of course, in supporting us during this period, you’ll be giving us the invaluable time we need to work on all other grant and funding applications as well as developing the structure of Muijala so we can exist sustainably in the future.
