Lena's Fight Against Brain Cancer

Donation protected

I want to introduce you to this incredible vivacious 20-year-old, Lena. Lena is a daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend, little sister, and animal lover. Lena is a full-time college student taking a premed curriculum with aspirations of being an OB/GYN. She has been a hard-working McDonald's employee since the age of 15, and had recently been promoted to be a general manager of her own location. Unfortunately, she has been diagnosed with an aggressive malignant brain tumor (grade 4 diffused hemispheric glioma) and is preparing to undergo rigorous treatment to combat this tumor. This journey has been and will continue to be physically, emotionally, and financially draining, making it difficult for her and the family to focus solely on recovery. We are determined to alleviate these burdens and support the family so they can concentrate on healing and keeping Lena's spirits high.

Lena's Story and Treatment Plan:
On February 28th Lena went to the hospital because she couldn't feel her right arm and the right side of her face was numb. She initially tried passing of the numbness as exhaustion, but fortunately her friend Vic insisted she go to the hospital. CT scan revealed a large mass in the left frontal lobe. She was transferred to a trauma center where more in-depth testing was performed including multiple CT scans, MRI's, spinal tap, and blood work. On March 5th they performed a biopsy and confirmed it was a glioma and was referred to Duke. On the 19th of March Lena had her first appointment at Duke, a treatment plan was discussed, and she was scheduled for an awake craniotomy on March 21st. Surgery went well, and they were able to remove almost all of the tumor leaving her without any permanent deficits. On April 1st Lena and her mother Josselyn met with the oncology team and a treatment plan was developed. Lena was fitted with a special helmet in preparation for extensive radiation and oral chemotherapy was started. This type of cancer comes with a dismal prognosis, and we are praying for a miracle. Lena has shown such resilience and strength, and we are in awe of her bravery.
