WHO ARE WE?
Musical Theatre Repertory at the University of Southern California was established in 2005 and is dedicated to enriching students’ lives through the production of quality musical theatre. As the only student theatre group committed to producing musicals at USC, our goal is to provide students with the opportunity to participate in musical theatre pieces supplementary to those produced by USC. WHAT WE NEED:
MTR is run exclusively by USC students. We receive no outside support from faculty or professional companies. Since our company is entirely student-run, each one of us puts in an enormous amount of time and effort to bring our productions to the stage. That being said, our financial resources are limited and our student production designers rely on the support of our donors to bring their designs to life. Funds we raise will be used to cover costs associated with lighting, sound, costumes, scenery, props, royalties, filming equipment and more. These key elements are vital not only in helping our production reach its full potential but also in providing design students with valuable production opportunities!

WHY UNPRECEDENTED?
Unprecedented was born out of a need to create theater in a pandemic world. This piece is an authentic and real portrayal of the COVID-19 shutdown and the emotions that students felt as they were packed up and sent home for the first time since graduating high school. This is MTR’s first adventure into the world of feature films. Our story follows college senior Diana and her best friends, Taylor and Marshall, now trapped in their childhood bedrooms. Desperate to connect, they log into their computers and unpack their new reality: graduating online, the awkwardness of facetime relationships, the intensity of mental illness, an uncertain future, and of course drinking on Zoom at 2pm. Driven by a pop-musical score with witty and raw dialogue, this digital musical takes a completely unprecedented step into a new genre of musical theater.
This project is unlike any MTR show before. And no, it is not a Zoomsical. Unprecedented will be filmed with a Director and Director of Cinematography through phones, laptops, and cameras to create a digital laptop movie following CDC and USC Covid-19 guidelines. We are really excited about this new project format.
THE IMPACT:
This campaign will make our entire process feasible. We hope that by producing high-quality independent student productions, we can support other student groups to provide as many opportunities as possible for USC students! MTR has been producing musicals for and by the students during the past two decades now. Our goal for this year is to expand and further support the SDA community by providing valuable career and professional events, such as dance workshops, alumni networking events, audition preparation workshops and more.
