Hello everyone, my name is Felecia Morgan and I am the mother of 3 years old Joanna Elaina Morgan. I am from a small rural community of Goshen in Clarendon and I am asking for some help for my daughter who is unable to hear or speak.
When Joanna was born, she only came out with a very short small cry and was taken away to be placed on oxygen, after which she was supposed to be okay and I was discharged from the hospital. While growing, she seemed to be like any other normal child, but as she got bigger, I started to see some changes in her behavior. I noticed that when I called her, she would not respond and I thought she was just being stubborn and independent. I would take her to the clinics for her immunization vaccines some months, and I would tell them my struggles with her. They reassured me that she was growing and I should watch it.
At 8 months old, I got further suspicious as to why she never listens to me and so I took her to an ENT specialist. At the time, the specialist said she had some cold/mucous in her ears and gave me a nose drops and some pain medications. The following few days after this, it started raining and I noticed that she got very very excited and began jumping up and down. It was then and there that I realized that my daughter heard something for the very first time.
After the medications were finished, I got little to no more reactions from her for a while. Still not satisfied, I decided take her to a pediatrician, who then referred her to an audiologist when she was around 2 years and some months old. Upon doing a test, it was discovered that her cochlea (is a portion of the inner ear that receives sound in the form of vibrations, which cause the stereocilia to move. The stereocilia then convert these vibrations into nerve impulses which are taken up to the brain to be interpreted) wasn't develop.
She is now 3 years old and cannot speak or hear. Because of this, she gets really upset, especially when she try to communicate. I cannot understand her and she cannot understand me. I wanted her to be able to communicate so I enrolled her at the Woodside school for the Deaf (May Pen unit, Clarendon) and she is the youngest child to be enrolled there. I am also trying to learn some of her sign language because I want to be able to communicate with her. However, due to COVID19 she has been home since March, with not much teachings.
She was referred to do an ARB test (auditory brainstem response test is a safe and painless test to see how the hearing nerves and brain respond to sounds. It gives health care providers information about possible hearing loss) before any treatment plans can be put into place for her.
She was also referred to do an MRI, due to her behavioral changes (anger, irritability, I have to be holding her down at times if she do things out of the ordinary etc.)
My wish for her is to get help so she could at least hear the sound of my voice, her brother's & father's voice and have a normal childhood. I also want to enroll her in a good school where she can learn good sign languages and communicate with other children like her. As a mother, who have to deal with her daily, I know that it is very hard for her as well. Sometime she would just cry when she is trying to say something and nothing is coming out.
It pains my heart to see my child struggle and I would do anything in the world to help her. I was laid off from work since March 2020 due to COVID19 and so finances are very very low for my family.
