MSU iGEM 2018

Our story begins with the humble rice plant.

Once upon a time, people all around the world lived happily, growing rice, watching crops grow, and admiring the ocean from afar.

Then, everything changed when the oceans began to rise.

Suddenly, the ocean was not so far away, salinating the soils of farmers around the world, reducing their harvest, and causing distress in significant portions of South America, Africa, and Asia. The poor crops increased production of ethylene as they became stressed. It appeared bleak.

All hope seemed lost, until eight undergraduate students from Michigan State University in East Lansing came to save the crops. These students had been hand selected to represent MSU in the synthetic biology competition known as iGEM. Armed with knowledge, greenhouse space, pipettes, and loads of coffee, the team stood up against world salination.

One bright student declared, "We can collect and culture bacterial endophytes, add PGP traits, infect plants with engineered endophytes, and grow plants under abiotic stresses to save the day! We will save the world!"

The team embarked on their quest to save the world against salination. However, help was needed...

That's why we need you!

We will be conducting this research as part of the iGEM competition, in which teams from all over the world use synthetic biology to solve problems from fields such as agriculture, medicine, and more. In order to conduct our research, our team needs to raise $3000. This covers supply costs as we begin this journey. While some funds have come from Michigan State and other sponsors, science is pricey and we don't want to cut this project short. We would appreciate any money you can give to support our team and our research.
