Ms. Smith’s 1st Grade Class

I teach 1st grade at a school on the South West side of Chicago. The school I work for is part of a network whose mission is to transform underperforming urban schools. 97% of the students at my school come from low-income families. Teachers in my network are only given a $250 stipend for basic supplies (pencils, crayons, whiteboard markers, folders, notebooks, etc.) to last them the entire school year (keep in mind this is for a class of 20-30 kids!) Manipulatives and hands-on materials are a critical part of early childhood education and I would love to be able to provide my kids with everything they need to succeed this year.
