Our sweet and rambunctious Everly was recently diagnosed with several unique vision issues.  Her two eyes are both healthy individually, but they are not working together properly, in turn affecting her reading and writing. Her formal diagnosis is intermittent-alternating exotropia, suppressive binocular vision, fusion with defective stereospsis, and both pursuit & saccadic eye movement deficiency. 

We also learned during her vision assessment that Everly's eye movements are at the level of a 5-6 year old's so as you can imagine, her struggle with everyday tasks can become challenging and frustrating. Since Everly's eyes do not move as fast as her brain, she easily loses focus on a page when she is reading or writing. As the day progresses, both of her eyes get tired and her vision starts becoming blurry. We were heartbroken to find out all of this, but we now understand why she has struggled in school all these years.

As a result of these findings, she will need a minimum of weekly vision therapy for 18 months to start retraining her eyes and brain. Think of this as physical therapy but for your eyes! Unfortunately, this therapy is not covered by insurance and requires payment up front.  Glasses nor surgery are an option at this stage of her condition.
