MS Fundraiser for Kate

This is my best friend Kate. Kate was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 18 years ago,  but 5 years ago it transitioned  to progressive disease.  Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an incurable, neurodegenerative condition in which the immune system attacks the central nervous system. Ever since I have known Kate, she has never complained about her condition and has bravely faced whatever has been thrown at her.

Kate currently faces an unknown future. Following a relapse in October 2018, where she was hospitalised with severe loss of sensation to her lower limbs, her mobility has been restricted & her drivers licence was taken away from her unexpectedly. The only way to regain her independence is to learn how to drive with modifications to her car, requiring hand controls installed and to learn how to drive with these modifications. It is important to Kate to have her independence and to be able to continue to work.

These driving lessons are $100 each. She will need approximately 20 lessons. To modify her car it will cost around $10,000.

Even walking around a shopping centre has become difficult. Kate gets tired easily. She needs to purchase a mobility scooter which cost approx. $3800.

Kate in currently on a 2yr trial for the only Disease Modifying Drug available in Australia for progressive disease, however it hasn't been approved by the PBS for progressive disease, only relapsing remitting disease. Once the trial finishes in 6 months, it will be at an out of pocket cost of approximately $65000 per year until PBS approval is gained.

Kate does not like to ask for help, so I am setting up this page for her. She is an amazing woman with 2 beautiful girls and an incredibly supportive husband.
