Nellie

We have all heard the phrase – to know someone is to love them, they are impossible to resist. That sums up our friend Nellie Hayden. She is the epitome of kindness, love and faith. To be her friend means that you will always have constant support, a helping hand and an ally for anything life throws your way. Our friend now needs us.

Earlier this year Nellie received the news that all women dread to hear. She was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Her world came to a halt, she was immediately filled with the worry and fear that such a diagnosis brings with it. It was crushing to her inner circle as we watched her struggle to accept what she was being told but because she is naturally a positive person filled with faith, she put on those big girl panties and said – “I got this and I will beat it!” Unfortunately, it was soon discovered that our beautiful friend was going to have a tough battle ahead of her, as it had spread and the options for treatment were extremely limited.

Nellie’s cancer is aggressive and requires 2 drugs to be taken daily at a cost of nearly $20k per month. After working all her life, she finds that her insurance will only pay so much and leaves her with costs of over $3,000 each month. As a retiree who lives alone, that is an astronomical cost.

Nellie is the perfect Mom, Grandma, Sister, friend……she is the person who is always there. Nellie has raised two incredible boys by herself while working, tending to her house and yet always finds time to be there for others. 3 years ago she was blessed with her gorgeous Grand-daughter Penelope who is her sun, moon and all the stars in the world. Last month she was again thrilled to find out that in Feb 2024 she will get yet another gift when her expected twin grandsons arrive!!

Nellie worked for British Airways for 25 years. In that time there was nobody at the airport that she did not touch. While raising her sons, working way more than the normal 40 hours, she also found the time to be involved in every charity and fundraiser for the many people in the aviation world who needed help. She has been a part of people’s personal battles, even when she herself was struggling to keep going financially. She did it all without complaint! Our Nellie has always loved people and after retirement she continued doing customer service but this time she is surrounded by children. She has been a school crossing guard in Oceanside for the past 5 years where she takes great delight sharing in the lives of her small charges.
