After Marci died in 2007, her family, friends, and colleagues decided that the best way to honor her memory and to make use of the many donations that poured in was to set up a fund that would support the kinds of teaching and learning that she was passionate about – The Marci Resnick Teacher Fund (MRTF).
Each year for the last ten years, the MRTF has distributed $500 grants to elementary teachers in Philadelphia public schools. The MRTF steering committee is made up of her family members, including her children, and colleagues from the National Writing Project and the Philadelphia Writing Project. It is in recognition of the important work that classroom teachers do as well as the realities of underfunded and under resourced public schools that we hope to provide some resources so teachers can be creative in their classrooms in the ways that Marci valued. Please donate todate so we can continue supporting these teachers, their students, and the learning they do together!
We've given grants to teachers all across city, reaching hundreds of students in dozens of schools. Here's a map of where we're been able to support amazing teachers do amazing work:
Last year, recipients used the grant to create student-led and specialized classroom libraries, carry out a service learning project on gun violence, and develop their skills in using restorative practices in their classroom. Jennifer Lee at Folk Arts and Community Treasures in Chinatown developed a classroom library of "just right" books for her special education students:
