As anyone who has worked with Mrs. Viv knows, she could have easily been successful at any number of high-paying careers, but she has chosen to selflessly, lovingly, and passionately educate our kids for 41 years. As an educator myself, I have never met another teacher who is more engaging, more passionate about instilling a love for learning in our kids, or more well-prepared for the subject matters she teaches. She has single-handedly changed the trajectory of my oldest son’s academic career through the skills she has taught him. We could not be more thankful and I know many of you feel the same way.
True to her ever-joyful nature, Mrs. Viv’s consistent response to me asking how she’s doing is, “I’m blessed! How are YOU?”. She is never one to complain and is always one to extend a compassionate ear to everyone else as well as readily extend prayer over her students and their families. After many years, I have come to know her well enough to be able to probe deeper, to inquire of her health and that of her husband, Ken, and their children, specifically their son, Doug, who has severe handicaps. This has been more than a tumultuous year for Mrs. Viv physically. She and Ken have both struggled on many fronts and have had to undergo many expensive tests. Now she is scheduled to undergo spinal fusion surgery on December 13th. I know from firsthand experience that this is not an easy or inexpensive operation as I had this identical procedure several years ago.
Under much duress and cajoling, Mrs. Viv has humbly surrendered to my many requests to allow you and your family to know of the physical and financial hardships they are currently facing. It wasn’t an easy sell - let me assure you! She is a much better giver than receiver.
It is my deepest desire that we, as the families, students, and alumnae who have benefited from this amazing woman’s gifts and presence in our lives, would bless her with our prayers and financial contributions to allow her to pay the large costs of her medical care, take the necessary unpaid time off and build a small cushion for her ongoing medical needs. She has sacrificed a career that would have ensured her of paid time off, vacation days, and subsidized health premiums; we have been the direct benefactors. Would you please join me in blessing Mrs. Viv and Ken with your prayers and financial support if you are able?
We may not all know each other, but we are all a part of Mrs. Viv’s family, as well as legacy; we have been so richly blessed by her love for us and our children. I pray you will search your heart and give to Mrs. Viv and Ken as the Lord leads you, knowing full well that in His perfect timing and gracious ways, He will also provide for your every need. I praise God for His perfect love, compassion, goodness and generosity and for the fellowship of believers!
In Christ,
April Henry
