**Update**
Mom has passed. She is missed. Thank you all for any and all support for one of my mother's last wishes.
-Jon-
The third week of January my mother collapsed in front of her kindergarten class. After swift actions by her colleagues, DC EMTs, and Howard University Hospital my mom was stabilized and diagnosed with a brain tumor. The surgical team at Virginia Hospital Center successfully removed mom’s tumor a week after her collapse.
While mom’s surgery was a success, her diagnosis is terminal. Which means she won’t be back to school.
My mom loves early childhood education. She loves the classroom and most importantly, she loves her students. Her first teaching job was in her 20’s and she hasn’t really stopped except for a brief retirement in her late 60’s. She came back to the classroom in her 70’s because she missed it so much.
Most of mom’s classroom years were spent in NYC specifically Harlem, the Bronx, Queens or throughout my hometown of Washington DC (SE/SW/NW). She also taught abroad in London, Sydney, and even supported the mission SHAPE(Belgium).
The lion’s share of her efforts were in the public school systems, but she also worked at the YMCA, Headstart, taught early childhood welfare to work classes, and most recently kindergarten at the St Augustine School in Washington DC.
Months before mom’s health issues, she asked me to help her with a retirement gift. She wanted to upgrade the STEM lab at her school.
This is where you, dear reader, come in. If you are able to make a monetary contribution to support my mother’s retirement gift, my family and I would be grateful.
Love & Gratitude,
Jon and the entire Maceda family
