Hi there!
My name is Lindsay and on Wednesday 6/28, I was driving my usual route to work when I witnessed the car in front of me run over a kitty and continue driving (the horror can't be unseen).
I quickly came to a stop and watched as this cat frantically crawled its way across the street to safety. Thankfully, it was near a parking lot, so I was able to immediately pull in and stay with the cat until my husband came with a carrier (we live close to this location).
Kitty was in shock and I could see it had no use of its hind legs at all. We rushed this babe to Veterinary Emergency Group in Shrewsbury where they were able to get her in ASAP.
After evaluation (xrays, ultrasound, blood work, etc.) it was discovered that little miss has multiple fractured ribs on her left side, multiple lung contusions, and mild pneumothroax. They could tell she was in intense pain as well, so they kept her overnight for observation and pain management.
I couldn't just leave this babe with no one, so I took responsibility for her until we could either locate the owners or find an adopter, rather than simply dropping her off as a stray and wondering who-knows-what would happen to her (I was fully invested very quickly!).
The next day, 6/29, I called VEG for an update and that's when her lower half paralysis was confirmed by the vet. We decided to transfer little miss to Tufts for an MRI and neurologist evaluation to determine just how severe the spinal injury is. This is TBD as we are waiting for the testing to be performed.
Now, I wouldn't normally be reaching out to fund something that is completely my choice. However, I refused to simply drop Mrs. Kitty off without knowing who she belonged to or what was going to happen to her. She was still considered a stray and euthanasia would've been likely. I knew in my heart that she wasn't a stray - she was healthy looking, well groomed, and really docile. I don't regret a second of giving her a chance.
Despite her challenges over the past day, she has a fighting spirit, and she LOVES head pets. Seriously, she can't use her whole lower half but is still nudging everyone for head scratchies. The VEG employees all loved her instantly. It's impossible not to.
That being said, I implore you to help me fund the care that this girl needs and deserves. She has a lot of life left and I want to help her live it to the fullest. The initial emergency vet bill was $2679.80, and with her transfer to Tufts, we still don't know the exact number, but the estimate we were given was $6000 on the low end and $8000 on the high end. A 75% deposit was due on the high end in order to start neurology care (including MRI) today. The $6000 was paid but we are stretched now after this unexpected expense. Depending on what is needed for treatment moving forward, this could mean additional steep costs.
I know no one owes us anything, but please consider helping us to get this beautiful, loving, and adorable babe back to her best furball self! I appreciate everyone who has shared her story, reached out with kind words, or simply supported my family's decision to help this girl.
I know Mrs. Kitty thanks you all to her very core for the prayers and love she's received. I'll keep the updates coming so you can follow along in her journey.
With sincerest thanks and appreciation,
The Spada/Mitterko Family
