My adopted dog, Radar (or as I often call him, "Rei-Rei"), is very important to me, both as an emotional support animal around the house and as a friend. He makes me smile with his goofy antics, lets me hug him when I'm sad, and even saved my life once!
Unfortunately, my buddy has been having problems with his health recently that requires surgery to resolve, the cost of which is beyond my means.
After hurrying him to the emergency vet on the night of September 28th, he was diagnosed with rectal prolapse. There, they did blood work (normal, other than a slightly elevated white blood count, likely due to inflammation) and prescribed medications to hopefully address the cause of the prolapse, including dewormer, antibiotics, probiotics, as well as pain management.
None of the easy fixes worked, and every time he's pooped since then, he has had a minor prolapse (which resolves on its own, though it can take a couple of hours sometimes). It is truly awful to see him go through this.
His regular vet prescribed a prescription dog food that is easily digestible, along with stool softeners and canned pumpkin. He then had an abdominal ultrasound on Monday, October 10th, which thankfully did not show any other areas of concern, but the vet determined at that point that the prolapse is caused by a mass that needs to be surgically removed, and she expressed concern that it appeared to have gotten worse in the week since she had seen him previously.
Her recommendation is to have the surgery done by a specialist because while she believes she could remove much of the mass, due to the complexity of the area, she would be unable to remove it entirely. She estimated the surgery would cost around $1,100 if she were to do it, though I do not have an official quote. I do not know how much more it would cost to have it done by a specialist, though that is the ideal situation, as they could hopefully remove the mass entirely. We do not know what the mass is made of and will not know unless a biopsy is done during surgery, which I hope will be financially possible in order to know if it is potentially cancerous or otherwise.
I am disabled and am really struggling with how to help my pooch get the care he needs and deserves. He is otherwise happy and healthy and I hope he can get to feeling well again soon! Any help is deeply appreciated; thank you so much for helping my sweet little beagle!
