Hello!
My name is Melissa Rodriguez, I’m 21 years old and I have recently been diagnosed with Subcutaneous Panniculitis-like T-cell Lymphoma. It is a very rare form of cancer, I was last told that there were only about 80 total cases thus far.
I started noticing lumps on September of 2016. Then the fevers started around March, but worsened throughout the year. Alongside other symptoms, my arm, face, and neck all started to swell up. But I didn’t seek the proper help I needed until I received benefits from my previous job in the end of 2017. I counted 16 high fevers right before I was admitted to a hospital, most took place in less than a month. I was hospitalized after reaching 104.5 Fahrenheit and running the worst rigors while at work one day. I spent 4 1/2 weeks in total, on a hospital bed, in 2 different hospitals. Turns out I’m very symptomatic as well. After the blood draws, tests, scans, biopsies, and average food... I was finally diagnosed with SPTCL.
I’ve had to leave 1 job, and lose the other due to the cancer. I no longer have the income or benefits that would have supported the treatments and bills ahead of me. There are lost wages involved with my family as well, with having to take time off to be at home and care for me.
My previous issue was getting my chemotherapy drug approved through insurance, but my cancer is too rare to cover. Currently I am at the stage of awaiting approval for financial assistance on receiving the drug. So that hopefully, one day, I can begin treatment.
After some much thought and conversations with friends, I’ve decided to ask for help. This illness is not only effecting me, but my family. I’ve moved back in and since, my mother has had to work harder and be away longer, in order to support my new living and medical costs. My little brother and grandma have had to go through some changes as well for me and try to help financially at the same time. I was usually a, “I will figure it out”, type of person if I ran into a financial wall. But this is involving my family, so now I need to ask for help, and me coming into this conclusion is all thanks to the emotional support I’ve received from my friends.

Mi nombre es Melissa Rodríguez, tengo 21 años y recientemente me han diagnosticado linfoma de células T similar a la paniculitis subcutánea. Es una forma muy rara de cáncer, me dijeron que hasta el momento solo había 80 casos en total.
Empecé a notar protuberancias en septiembre de 2016. Luego, las fiebres comenzaron alrededor de marzo, pero empeoraron durante todo el año. Junto con otros síntomas, mi brazo, cara y cuello comenzaron a hincharse. Pero no busqué la ayuda adecuada que necesitaba hasta que recibí los beneficios de mi trabajo anterior a fines de 2017. Conté 16 fiebres altas justo antes de ingresar en un hospital, la mayoría se realizó en menos de un mes. Fui hospitalizado después de alcanzar 104.5 Fahrenheit y correr los peores rigores en el trabajo un día. Pasé 4 semanas y media en total, en una cama de hospital, en 2 hospitales diferentes. Resulta que soy muy sintomático también. Después de extraer la sangre, pruebas, escaneos, biopsias y comida promedio ... finalmente me diagnosticaron SPTCL.
Tuve que dejar 1 trabajo y perder el otro debido al cáncer. Ya no tengo los ingresos o beneficios que habrían respaldado los tratamientos y las facturas que tengo por delante. También perdí salarios relacionados con mi familia, tuve que tomarme un tiempo libre para estar en casa y cuidar de mí.
Mi problema anterior era obtener mi medicamento de quimioterapia aprobado a través de un seguro, pero mi cáncer es demasiado raro para cubrirlo. Actualmente estoy en la etapa de espera de la aprobación de asistencia financiera para recibir el medicamento. Entonces, con suerte, un día, puedo comenzar el tratamiento.
Después de reflexionar mucho y conversar con amigos, he decidido pedir ayuda. Esta enfermedad no solo me afecta a mí, sino a mi familia. He regresado y, desde entonces, mi madre ha tenido que trabajar más duro y ausentarse por más tiempo para poder pagar mis nuevos costos de vida y médicos. Mi hermano pequeño y mi abuela también tuvieron que pasar por algunos cambios para mí y tratar de ayudar económicamente al mismo tiempo. Por lo general, era un "tipo de persona" si me topaba con un muro financiero. Pero esto involucra a mi familia, así que ahora necesito pedir ayuda, y llegar a esta conclusión es todo gracias al apoyo emocional que he recibido de mis amigos.
