Mr. Pope's grade 8 Fundraiser- WATERFIRST

Our fundraising journey first began with learning about residential schools in Canada and that we are not a perfect country. We studied about an Anishinaabe boy named Chanie Wenjack and how badly his life was changed when he was taken away from his family to go to school. Being separated from his family caused a lot of trauma and being made to change his culture led to him running away.
We are doing a walk because of Chanie. We will walk to raise awareness for Chanie who lost his life when he decided to walk home, trying to escape from the residential school so he could see his parents again. He died from hunger and exposure walking on the train tracks over 400 KM from his home. In April we will do a 2-hour walk to a local park and back to the school.

We wanted to find a modern Indigenous organization to raise the funds for. We chose Water First Education and Training Inc. because it is a current issue, and we need to deal with it because some indigenous people don’t have clean water. This is a crisis all over Canada and everyone should have access to clean water. We are in 2021, it should not be an issue.   To find out more go to the weblink -What You Can Do | Water First Education & Training Inc.
