Mr Gurruwiwi's Funeral
Donation protected
Mr Gurruwiwi was a Yolngu elder, a leader and teacher of law, dance and yidaki, the Gamurrung songman for Galpu Clan of Elcho Island. In his life, he was deeply loved and respected by his family and friends, and all who collaborated with him is his music career. Mr Gurruwiwi performed with and wrote songs for Diamond Dogs, Gurrumul, Yothu Yindi and Barra–West Wind, and directed the use of sacred Yolngu songs and themes through his traditional custodianship in The Djari Project.
Mr Gurruwiwi passed away this year. The loss of this incredible person, not just for those who knew him personally, but also all who were touched by his musical gifts, is profound. Mr Gurruwiwi's family is grieving the loss of this amazing man and preparing for a traditional funeral at Galiwin'ku. It was Mr Gurruwiwi's wish to be burried on his homeland on Elcho Island. His family have committed to making this possible, but there are lots of extra expenses for a funeral in a remote location and they're asking for help from those who knew and loved this man, from anyone who loved his music or can afford to help out. These donations will help with expenses like transporting Mr Gurruwiwi's body back home and paying for the flights and supplies needed for a remote, traditional ceremony.
Please help if you can. Your support means so much to his family at this time.
