Hi. This is my son, “Mr. C”. He was born with kidney disease and has had what felt like an endless stream of medical complications since. Stage IV cancer, Kyphoscoliosis, hypoglycemia, epilepsy, stage IV renal failure (including a few brushes with acute renal failure), restricted lung disease, genetic mutation that caused learning disabilities, severe speech delays, physical disabilities and somewhere in there I am sure there is something I am forgetting. His story is just so big.
The majority of his 13 years, I have had to stay at home with him as we could not afford the specialty care he would have required otherwise. For obvious reasons, this too was a financial strain. We have done the best we could over the years. I have always done odd and end things from home between acute illnesses, surgeries and hospital stays. In the beginning, my husband worked three jobs while also finishing college to further his career. Over time, he worked his way up from the very bottom to the position he has now that we are so proud of (but don’t share for privacy reasons). We are finally getting to that place we have tried to reach for 13 years; the place where we can live on one income and handle the medical bills as they come without creating more debt.
But first, we have this debt accumulated from all that time we have to pay down. Debt from medical bills, medical travel, hospital food, eating takeout while at hospitals, copays and more copays, etc. 13 years worth of revolving medical debt. We would accumulate it and pay some, accumulate more and pay some. It was just a revolving door. It’s hard to pay it off, when it keeps coming in. And over these 13 years it’s just stayed this burden we never could fully eliminate. And that’s where we are at. So I have set a goal to get it paid down as much as possible between now and Christmas. So that maybe FINALLY we can live a more normal life financially and let go of some of the trauma from the past 13 years and heal a bit. There is just so much weight we have been holding onto from what we have lived and this is part of that weight. Ready to see it gone!
To do that I am stitching for my son! Stitching to pay down what we have accumulated in medical debt.
I do this and share it through my Instagram page mostly. Sometimes FB.
Now it’s a little hard to keep track of how much goes to paying that amount off based on the number here, simply because donations for stitching for my son usually include the cost of goods for the item to be stitched as well. So while it will skew the numbers on here, I know and I will share updates along the way. But to give you an idea, if I sell 2,000 monogrammed shirts I would pay the debt off in full! So I am going to try and shoot for stitching 1,000 shirts these next few months to get half paid off from stitching.
