Few people in your life beyond your parents impact you more than teachers. Often the great ones care enough to push you beyond the lesson plan, are there for you when your parents aren't, and encourage you to try again when you fail.
My dad, Richard Case was that type of trailblazing educator with high standards and the tools to extract the best from his students. He taught as a Band Director at more than 11 Catholic Schools in Chicagoland for a total of 41 years. Forced into an early retirement due to complications with diabetes, joint replacements, and ultimately infection, he missed saying goodbye to his fellow teachers and students. He will never enter his band room again, as this latest infection has driven him into hospice care.
My Dad was a believer in the church and Catholic education. Both my sister, Becky and I attended St. Mary's in Buffalo Grove, IL. He devoted his life to the church and his students - wanting dearly to leave some sort of legacy. However this will not be possible without your help. The way his life will end leaves my mom with a pile of medical bills from 3 surgeries and another stack from 16 days in the Intensive Care Unit on a Ventilator.
Our family will use the donations to establish a scholarship supporting band students attending Catholic Schools, and to offset expenses incurred during his years in and out of hospitals and skilled facilities.
Thanks, and God Bless!
-Dave
More about his Life
My dad taught music to more than 10,000 students at St. Mary's, St. Hubert's, St. Anne, St. Theresa, Holy Family, Queen of the Rosary, St. Ferdinand, St. Raymond, Our Lady of Victory, St. James, and a few others as a student teacher.
In 1997, he created the Catholic Schools Band Camp that ran for 30 years. Founded by Rich and two other directors in Northern Indiana, it provided concentrated, advanced musical instruction to 220 students and 40 volunteer counselors every summer. In 2017, the camp ended in large part due to my Dad's deteriorating health.
He made significant contributions shaping the lives of his students. He was a key influencer of the careers of 40 General Music Teachers, 27 Band Directors, 15 Music Publishers, 10 Professional Musicians, and even 1 Grammy winner.
Impactful Educator, Loving Catholic, & Devoted husband. But to me he is just 'Dad'.
