Help Jo's Breast Cancer Journey

Donation protected
Well, I'm sorry guys, but the bills have come due..
..and breast cancer isn't cheap so we could really use some help!

Donations will go to:

Paying for the diagnostic PET and CT scans and future scans to keep tabs on my cancer and make sure the meds are working.

We were keeping this part close to the chest: but Ken and I were trying for a child before all of this landed on us. Because my cancer treatment is basically putting me into forced menopause, we were given the option to freeze my eggs to preserve any option of us having a child, which we did and that obviously incurs some costs.

Kaiser copays for weekly blood draws and EKGs to make sure my body is handling the cancer medications ok.

Ongoing costs for medications and supplements to keep me healthy.

Below is the cancer journey so far and further updates will be posted here.

Ken and I greatly appreciate all of the love and help! And we're still gonna kick Marla's ass! \m/

TL;DR: GO GET ANY AND ALL SUGGESTED CANCER SCREENINGS! Right now! Do not wait! Get them early if you can!!! If it’s a mammogram, prostate exam, colonoscopy, whatever – go and get it done!! Trust me, the temporary discomfort/awkwardness is much better than a lifelong cancer diagnosis!!!

I went in for my first mammogram recently and it came back abby-normal. They found a mass that could be just dense breast tissue, ooooorr it could be cancer, so they scheduled me for a biopsy. Turns out it is breast cancer - I have a grape sized tumor in ol’ righty and enlarged lymph nodes on the right hand side. So, from there, they wanted me to have surgery to remove the tumor (I named her Marla.) and the enlarged lymph nodes. Then I’d have radiation treatment, possibly chemotherapy, and would need to be on hormone blockers for 5-10 years, but it could be cured! Before that though, they did a full body (PET) scan to make sure that the cancer hasn’t spread past the breast to other parts of my body – specifically liver, lungs, bones and brain. Well fuck – I have 3 out of the 4 Infinity Stones: it spread to bones, liver and lungs but thankfully not my brain! (This noggin is cleeaaann…) Long story long: The traces of cancer are still very small and my oncologist said she is treating this as they would a chronic illness - I’ll never be “cured”, but it is treatable. She wants to hold off on chemotherapy until absolutely necessary and the type of cancer I have is thankfully receptive to hormone therapy so she wants to start me on hormone blockers that will hopefully stop the cancer from spreading further. But if it continues to grow or if down the line the hormone blockers stop working, then we’ll have to go back to the drawing board and discuss other options.

So yeah, it's been a helluva month! But I’m facing this with a healthy amount of inappropriate humor and a can-do attitude! And of course, the wonderful love and support of my family and friends!! We didn’t catch it as early as we could have, but we hopefully caught it early enough! So if you’ve read this far, do me a favor and GO. GET. CHECKED. If I didn’t go and get a routine mammogram I would have never known this was brewing!!

September 12th 2025:
Cancer Update: I've been on a daily hormone blocker pill for roughly 3 weeks with no issues. The hormone blocker blocks the specific hormones my cancer feeds on. Tuesday I started a daily CDK 4/6 inhibitor pill that interrupts how the cancer cells divide and multiply. One of the mild side effects is nausea, which thankfully I have had very little of. But I need to go in weekly for blood tests and EKGs because two of the major side effects are raising of my liver enzymes and/or causing an irregular heartbeat. So they obviously want to keep a sharp eye on that!

I've been trying to be positive and strong, but to be honest the real kicker here has been I ended up getting pneumonia. I'm guessing from the multiple hospital visits and my immune system being tanked due to having cancer! I took a full round of antibiotics but I'm still coughing like crazy and it's really wearing me out. I had a pulmonary function test (which is fucking wild!) and I'm awaiting results on that. So yeah, I'm hanging in there and still doing what I can mentally and physically to kick Marla's ass!!
