Help Daily Groceries Move On Up (the street)

Help Daily Groceries Co-Op Move On Up (the street) - and help “Keep Athens Athens!”

We’ve seen local favorites The Grit, Heirloom Cafe and Collective Harvest close their doors in the past year, and we lost Ike & Jane’s not long before that. The Prince Ave corridor is still one of Athens’ treasures despite these losses, and we like to think that Daily Groceries has helped make it that way.

Now, Daily Groceries needs your help to make sure we’re around for another 30 years. Please consider donating today to directly make a positive impact on our community and help “Keep Athens Athens!”

Let us explain…

To continue to serve as Athens' only community-owned grocery store, we’re excited to announce our plans to move right down the street into a bigger space. You probably know that Daily Groceries Co-Op is one of the longest-running local businesses on the Prince Avenue corridor, and our mission has always been to intentionally source excellent food for our community while being a welcoming place to shop and work. This move will let us fulfill that mission in a better way - and will make it more likely that we’re here for you for years to come.

So why move away from the wonderful place we’ve been for so long?

Reason #1: A more centrally-located and larger space, with better parking, will allow us to expand our offerings, truly provide our community with a full-service grocery store, and allow us to serve more people who may not have had access to healthy food in the past.

Reason #2: A larger space gives us greater buying power and allows us to take advantage of quantity discounts that will translate into more attractive pricing for the community.

Reason #3: Our new space will allow us to further expand our Community Incubator program, allowing local makers and producers to introduce their products into our marketplace. This allows new local startups to thrive and grow in our community without cost-prohibitive startup demands.

Reason #4: We’ll be able to open the doors to more local farmers who may have lost significant sources of income with the recent closures of Collective Harvest, Athens Locally Grown, Heirloom Café, and the Grit.

Reason #5: The grocery industry has changed over the past 30 years that we’ve been in business, and it has become clear that our model of offering high-quality food simply isn’t sustainable in its current location due to its size. This move will serve to ensure the Daily Groceries Co-Op’s ability to serve the Athens community for the next 30 years.

Where are we moving?

We’ve found a building just as unique as we are! It’s located at 1190 Prince Ave, just across from Piedmont Hospital. You might know it as the former “Walgreens Building” or as “that round building.” It is one of the few Mid-Century Modern buildings left in Athens. And we’re going to help save it!

The Help We Need Now

To move and expand, we need $150,000 in donations from the community, and we’re launching a GoFundMe campaign to raise this money.

Will you help?

We run a tight ship at Daily Groceries, and we manage our finances with great care. We assure you that every dollar raised in this campaign will go directly to the project of getting us set up and ready to open early this summer.

The funds that we raise through our community supporters will be used primarily for the security deposit for the new lease, licenses, the physical buildout (coolers are expensive!) and inventory costs. We intend to keep you posted on exactly how the funds are being used so you have confidence that we’re being good stewards of your donation.

So please, donate today to keep Daily Groceries Co-Op a part of the amazing fabric of our community for years to come, and by doing that, help Keep Athens Athens!
