-- Utah Gains the Nation's Newest Classical Liberal Arts School with Mount Liberty College --
The Board of Directors of Mount Liberty College recently announced the establishment of the College and its opening day. Located at 41 North Rio Grande Street, near The Gateway in Salt Lake City, MLC will matriculate its first class of 20 freshman students this fall, with classes convening on 26 August.
“Mount Liberty is a true classical liberal arts college,” Board Chair Jennifer Jensen explained. “Our curriculum is based on the Great Books and the Great Ideas that have moved civilization forward over the centuries.”
At a time when the emphasis is on “getting a job,” Mount Liberty has a different emphasis. It will offer only a single degree, a Bachelor of Arts in Classical Liberal Arts. Students receiving this degree will be well-prepared for graduate school in such professions as law, communications, and business. Their exposure to the thoughts of the world’s great thinkers, writers, painters, musicians, and architects will give them the ability to integrate truth and beauty into whatever their careers they may pursue over a lifetime. It could involve starting a business, raising a family, working in politics or law or education, or perhaps in fields not yet known.
“That’s the great blessing of a liberal arts degree,” said Board Member Gordon Jones. “Proper study of the past prepares you for a future that is not even dreamt of yet. Look at top management at the geekiest of dot com companies, and you will see degrees in Latin, in philosophy, in history, in literature. That is what is needed in the education of tomorrow’s creators. Learning to code is fine, but at some point, you have to decide what to code. That’s where a liberal arts education fits.”
Over the course of the four-year academic program, students will have an opportunity to engage in the application of classical knowledge and insights to the practical problems of modern life. Mount Liberty College strongly believes that a classical education is not only compatible with career success but essential to it.
Board Member Frank Brown said that Mount Liberty anticipates enrolling 20 freshman students in the Fall of 2019, and will add approximately that number each year for the next four years.
"We do not ever expect to be Behemoth University,” Mr. Brown said. “We will fill a niche. It may be a small niche, but it is a vital one.”
Tuition at Mount Liberty will be about one-fourth that of similar liberal arts colleges (of which there are none in Utah), and Mr. Brown expects that scholarship assistance will be available for the entering freshman class.
“We have received a generous grant from the Sorenson Legacy Foundation which will cover much of our operating costs for the first year, so fundraising going forward can be devoted to student aid. The college will accept no government funds, directly or indirectly, so as to be able to maintain its independence.”
With local nonprofit leader David Pack heading up initial Development efforts, MLC will gladly recognize three levels of support:
- Trojan Warriors: up to $500
- Roman Citizens: $501-$1,000
- Founding Fathers: $1,000 and up
Your gift will have more impact now - and in decades to come - for our community and culture and nation than perhaps any other cause you support. Every donation matters and makes a difference.
Thank you for your support!
