In May of 2019, we premiered Mother’s Word, a song cycle for soprano, actor, and pianist that explored transformative moments in the lives of mothers from the Bible. With lyrics by Marian Partee Lamb and music by Christina Whitten Thomas, the work included seven songs and two monologues, bringing a new dimension to women whose stories were recorded by the male authors of scripture.
For the event, we partnered with Elizabeth House, a non-profit organization in Pasadena that provides shelter and services for pregnant women experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, and other sources of trauma. We received a freewill offering for the organization and invited staff members from Elizabeth House to speak to the audience about their work.
The women involved with the creation of Mother’s Word, all professional artists in the Los Angeles area, felt this project could expand to include several more untold stories of these biblical women, as well as continue to support organizations dedicated to helping women in need of parenting support.
To that end, we have expanded Mother’s Word to include 17 characters from scripture, performed by three singers, an actor, and a pianist. The stories capture pain, grief, and frustration, but also humor, courage, and fierce love. The setbacks and successes of these imperfect women give hope to those struggling through the messy yet meaningful work of motherhood.
Why We Need Your Help
Mother’s Word is being produced and performed by an independent team of Los Angeles-based professional artists who desire to create a new, impactful work. Our GoFundMe Campaign will allow us to pay our artists for their work and to ensure that we can produce a show of the highest quality.
We are honored to have our performing team include soprano Rebecca Sjöwall, mezzo-soprano Alicia Emerson, alto Diane Wallace, actor Frances Hale, and pianist Lisa Edwards.
The premiere of the expanded Mother's Word will be at La Cañada Presbyterian Church on September 23 at 7pm and September 24 at 2pm. A pre-concert discussion with the writers will occur 30 minutes prior to each performance. Admission is free and childcare will be provided. A free-will offering at each performance will benefit the La Cañada Presbyterian Church Parent Ed Founders’ Scholarship Fund. The LCPC Parent Education Program reaches over 700 parents each year to provide vital child-rearing education to those in the greater Los Angeles area.
The performance on September 24 will be lived-streamed, so if you are out of town, you will be able to watch Mother's Word.
